I am really happy to see something other than the super bright Saturday morning cartoon coloring we've seen in almost every issue so far. It fits with Franks art, but I think it did a disservice to Gane and Santos

My apologies if this question was already answered, but will this be a continuation of Rulers of the Earth or is it a self contained story not related to ROTE?

So far I love of what I see of the art, and the premise sounds amazing. Can't wait to read this on my iPad :D

It (like all the miniseries) is a self contained universe having no impact or continuity with any other comic.

It will be released in parallel with Rulers of Earth, so you can continue enjoying that series as well.

I am optimistic, mostly because of the artwork. I know next to nothing about the author, and the concept of his most popular series doesn't really appeal to me (then again neither did 'Ork Stain' until i read Half Century War)... Anyway, hoping for the best

I really don't understand the reasoning why authors like Powell/Marsh/Ciaramella/John Layman and now Bunn and Wachter have such a hard on for GMK Ghidorah....other than a very small (though at times vocal) minority, G fandom as a whole *OVERWHELMINGLY* prefers the showa/heisei incarnations of KG by a substantially wide margin....no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Sadly, other than KG's appearance in HCW (Stokoe seems the only authur who has had any sense in how to use Godzilla's arch nemesis and most powerful foe properly), the other authors/artists working on these books seem solely fixiated on using arguably the least popular incarnation of what should be Godzilla's most imposing foe...I don't get it :?: :? Now, I'm not damning this series nor saying that I won't buy it over this matter (unlike another poster on here in regards to the appearance of some kaiju he didn't like), but it still is rather puzzling (and frustrating). Unless TOHO is forcing this upon IDW, I'd really be interested in hearing from Mowry/Curnow about the reasoning behind so many authors/artists' insistance on using GMK Ghidorah in these books....again, I just don't get it.

I'm not all that hung up on what design they use, so much as how its drawn and what the writing is like.

Besides, at least it isn't Kaiser Ghidorah.

If Toho's not going to allow the use of Showa Ghidorah I'd much rather see the GMK design than the Heisei version. At least GMK still has the eastern dragon vibe going for it as opposed to the relatively bland western look of Heisei Ghidorah.

Agreed. These monsters are already taken out of the context of their original films anyways, so it's more important how they are used in the story rather than the particular style of the character.

That's a good observation, although it does seem sometimes like RoE is the only IDW series that gives the monsters character (probably because of how animated their expressions are).. Even in HCW most of the monster cast was interchangeable aside from their attacks.

Yeah, HCW was a good read but felt a bit rushed at times. In particular the Ghana issue would have benefited from featuring only Godzilla and Hedorah, rather than all the other monsters. But clearly it was a story building issue, rather than a focus on the monsters. That book is also an excellent example of a well written comic taking the Toho monsters out of their original context and doing something new (although the last issue nails Ghidorah and Gigan IMO).

I feel like HCW's kaiju aren't really meant to have too much character (more force of nature), so I feel like it worked incredibly well for that story. ROE has by far the most characterful interpretations.

Hiroshi's tribe debates how to best avert the wraith of the rising monster, unaware that they may have already brought doom upon themselves! As monsters battle in the skies above, the choice Hiroshi makes will have profound affects on the future of humanity!

The top of Godzilla's head and atomic breath in that second cover is still visible over the logo in the first cover.

Oh goodie, GMK Ghidorah.... Image

Seriously, WTF? :?: :!:

Good to see Manda though...

Yeah, why toho would pick that Ghidorah to use is beyond me. It's a terrible design compared to the rest.

So, if I wanted to do a Godzilla mini series for IDW and wanted to use only Showa character designs would Toho give me hell?

They have been fine with Showa Anguirus, Gigan, Hedorah, etc .. We also saw Showa Ghidorah and 62 Goji on covers.

I thought I remember hearing that they don't like mixing eras of designs. So if you use a Millenium Godzilla, you have to use one of the Millennium Ghidrahs...if you wanna use Showa Ghidrah, you have to use a Showa Goji.

^ RoE, Legends and HCW all mixed Showa, Heisiei and Millenium incarnations.

I think the only place they would have insisted on GMK Ghidorah was in KoM, where the character was clearly a GMK iteration

Maybe Bunn and Wachter just wanted to use King Ghidorah's GMK design for this mini-series?

The 2001 Ghidorah may be one of the least memorable screen incarnations of that character due to its gratuitous role as hero and the suit's squatted stature (especially next to Godzilla), but there's nothing inherently wrong with the design itself. It looks great when it's drawn by a skilled comic artist, like in that picture.
