Post Your Godzilla/Dakaiju Book Collection!

Postby ebirahsmeg1 » Sun Jun 09, 2013 12:18 am

Recently, I saw a similar thread started over at TK and I thought it would be a great idea to do one here as well. Since there is already a "Collection Photos" thread in the Toys/Figures section, it's only fitting that there should be one in the Print/Books section as well.

So, post your Godzilla and kaiju books! Novels, comics, magazines, non-fiction, Japanese or Anerican G books...whatever - show it off

I'll go first :)

I've got tons of Godzilla books, and I'm almost as serious about collecting Japanese G books as I am about Godzilla figures. Here are just a few of my favorites in my collection (I'll definitely post more photos of my book collection in the future as this thread receives more interest):

Pictorial Books of Godzilla 1&2

Still the measuring stick for what I expect in a great Godzilla book. The main focus of these two books is not really the films themselves, but the actual suits of the monsters. An amazing collection of rare photos from multiple angles of all of the major monster suits, puppets, and props. It's really a shame that a Pictorial Book of Godzilla 3 was never published, as there are plenty of suits props and materials from both the Mothra 3 series and the Godzilla Millennium series that could easily fill up a 3rd book(however, the equally amazing Shogakukan series of kaiju film books have more than filled this void over the years).

The bottom line is that no serious G book collector should be without these two great books.

Godzilla Encyclopedia 1954-1999

IMO, this ranks right up with the Pictorial Books. Each page is colorful kaleidoscope of fascinating, and often rare images from not only the Godzilla series, but most of the non-G sci-fi films by TOHO as well. This book is by Shogakukan, and I believe they produce the best damn G books out there.

Godzilla Pocket Guide 52

A wonderful little gem of a book that always seems to slip under the radar and overlooked in these G book
discussions. Unlike these aforementioned books, this book does not focus on the suits or films, but the monsters themselves. It is basically a massive, compact dictionary of all Toho daikaiju and stats slickly organized into categories (earth monsters, space monsters, mecha, etc). In addition, this book also details all of the human enemy and alien factions (i.e. X-seijin, Nebula Space Hunter M, Red Bamboo, etc.) or mutants (Matango, H-man, Vapor Man, Vampire Doll, etc.) and most of the major military weapons. All of the SFX films from G54-GFW are covered, so this is about as comprehensive as a pocket guide could get. Hell, even the most insignificant creatures, such as the jungle lizard from GvsKing Kong and the "Leaf man" that attacks Ichiro in G's Revenge are featured...talk about dedication  This book is rather inexpensive compared to most Japanese books at around $10, so you can get a lot of bang for your buck. It's also fairly easy to find to boot...this book is vintage Shogakukan at their best.

Godzilla Women of Toho Mook
Image

This book is far better than a similar themed book released a while back (which focused mostly on GxMG's Shaku Yumiko instead of a *real* comprehensive book on TOHO's Godzilla women). Really a great book with a lot of stills of the most famous TOHO SFX actresses I had never seen before, as well as interviews with most of these lovely ladies (in Japanese of course). Even Tomoko Ai, who disappeared after making TOMG and has never really been interviewed, has a lengthy interview in this book.

Don't know how i missed this thread earlier

here is my IDW collection... this is every cover (minus the RE variants of KoM #1... although the charity cover collection is in there, so we'll call it a win on a technicality) for every IDW Godzilla release so far, including 2nd prints and Con exclusives... highlights include two KoM sketch covers from Eric Powell and Matt Frank and 2 sketch covers from Matt Frank for Legends. I also have a signed cover from Zornow with a Godzilla sketch.

All the rest of my Godzilla comics (with a few DH exceptions) are TPBs...

I'm looking for some pictorial Goji books... I see what Eb has posted. Any other books you could suggest?

I wonder if this topic can be stickied, seeing as there is a stick "Post your Toy Collection" thread in the toys section?

Anyways, one great thing about the release of the 2014 film here in Japan is the plethora of new Godzilla books that have been released. Here are some of the new books I've picked up so far:

Various Books (The two Yosensha books on the bottom, Shodai Godzilla and All TOHO Daikaiju book are real standouts and are quickly growing into two of my favorite Japanese G books)

very nice. I have an order in for the Yasushi Torisawa artbook and a Yuji Kaida artbook as well... they're somewhere out there in SAL land, so i would expect them by the end of the month.

Awesome collection! I have quite a few of the classic English language books, and then some Japanese language ones from when a friend visited Japan. I'll be sure to post some photos of them all soon.

Some of my favorite series of Godzilla books are the "Super Complete Works" series by Shogakukan. The distinct, unique covers of these books (up close shots of Godzilla and his main rival's mugs) combined with the kaleidoscope of photo layouts on every page, 360 shots of each suit, loads of making of/behind the scenes still, these books are fantastic. It's a shame that we didn't get a Shogakukan book for the latest 2014 film (I think they actually made one for the turdfest GINO), but at least we got the recently published All Toho Monster Encyclopedia by Shogakukan this past August.

The photos below of the ones I managaged to hunt down stateside in Missouri (which was no easy feat, let me tell ya  ) Unfortunately, most of the photos below are not original photos by me...they're various images I've found online from various places, for all my Super Complete Works books are back in America and I bought *long* before coming to Japan. The next time I go back stateside (who knows when that will be...haven't been home for nearly 5 years with no foreseeable plans too), I'll definitely try to take a group shot of all of the Shogakukan "Super Complete Works" books together.

I've also got the Mothra 3 Super Complete Works, but can't find any decent photo to represent it here.

And now here's a group photo of various "Super Complete Works" books I've managed to hunt down over the years while in Japan:

^ I have about 5 books from that series. I have been replacing other books with them whenever I can. Great series. I need to post some pictures from the new Yuji Kaida Godzilla artbook...terribly frustrating editing. Not worth it :(

The reason I asked is because I once considered the move myself and for much the same reasons. I've been to Tokyo in 2001 when I went to see GMK when it was released but it's unlikely I'll ever go back because of health reasons and family commitment. I think for most fans it's a fantasy to just pick up and move to Japan not knowing exactly how to go about it. I did find out while I was there that Japanese have a huge desire to learn english as I was told by a gentleman who approached me for lunch just for the opportunity for conversation. I seriously considered his suggestion to remain there and teach english as you did. I know if I had stayed I most definitely would not return to the US. Look at me now, married and living in rural Kansas, something I never would have imagined 10 or 15 years ago when residing in my home state Texas. Do I regret not staying? Yes, I do.

It seems like the "Super Complete Works" series by Shogakukan is the way to go for picture books for Heisei and Millennium... Any suggestions for good picture books that cover individual films or eras from 1954-Biollante? I have the Yosensha mook (All Toho Daikaiju) which has some good Showa pictures but overall thats a big gap in what the picture books i have cover.

I am particularly interested in Gigan, Megalon, Mechagodzilla 74 and Biollante

I have a bunch of books that I collected during Godzilla's 30th anniversary with the release of Godzilla 1985. There was a flood of books and mags that were easy to get at the time and I bought every one I could get my hands on, some more than one each. The one's I'm most proud of are the very first two you posted at the top of this thread. I bought both hard cover pictorial books, 1 & 2, at a comic book store in Austin when one of the employees asked if I was interested. I got them for $60 a piece and I share the same sentiments that you have for these items. I'll never part with them. They're worth every penny. I also have a number of large volume pictorial books on individual Godzilla movies, some Showa and some Heisei with folded mini posters from the films. I wish I had the means to post some pics but I don't. What I don't have is any materials beyond Heisei. I've got some catching up to do.

The mook on the left was a flop despite a promising Gigan cover... no real focus. Godzilla, Gamera, Ultraman, Fanart.. monochrome pictures, lots of (Japanese) text.

The book on the right is a very solid release. I'd recommend this one.

I've got that making of G84 book as well. It's pretty awesome. Lots of cool pictures from behind the scenes and blueprints for the models, etc. I've always liked the couple of pictures of the godzilla suit where it's either propped up with no one in it or Ken Satsuma is putting it on. There's one in particular where Godzilla is slumped forward and his head is being held up by his chin or something. The end result is it looks like the suit can actually move it's neck/head in a realistic fashion. It's little things like that that spark my imagination. I've always loved this suit but seeing just a hint of what it could be like if it wasn't so restrictive and could actually move like a real animal sets my imagination running.

Here's the good stuff from my collection (minus a couple mooks). I got a stack of other books I'm trying to sell... I guess I need to stop being lazy and get them on ebay

Ebirahsmeg1, where could a person pick up the two Pictorial Books and the two Toho Film Chronicles books you've recommended? I'm searching all over Amazon JP for them and coming up empty, maybe my Google-Translate skills are failing me.

It does help, thanks very much man. Just scored the two pictorial books, one from Amazon JP and one from YJ. :)
