I'm reading it now and am about half way through. I've not read any other Doc Savage stories, so I can't comment on it's faithfulness to the Savage-verse, but I believe that the author William Murray is well regarded by the Doc Savage fan community.
My other experience with pulp/adventure yarns are the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs, which I really enjoy. So far, "Doc Savage: Skull Island" fits the adventure yarn mold pretty well. Manly adventure in exotic parts of the world, exploration, danger, head-hunters, blow guns, dinosaurs, etc. The dialogue is a little stilted, that may be a function of the character's themselves, who I am unfamiliar with, or perhaps an aspect of pulp fiction more generally. Skull Island feels a little unfamilar, but I think that is due in part to this book being envisioned as a sort-of sequel to Joe DeVito's "Kong: King of Skull Island" (which is how they secured the rights for such a project). Even so, I am enjoying the book quite a bit. It's a fun adventure story, and the anticipation of Kong's arrival is really great, I haven't felt this way in a long time when reading genre fiction.
