IDW is not allowed to use the Seatopians, or the Kilaaks, or Red Bamboo etc

They may create some sort of stand in for them but they can't use them by name... So you may be asking how did they get away with Legends 3? That question gets asked a lot in this conversation, but never answered.

I don't think anybody is controlling Destroyah. I think it was being controlled but clearly the message at the end of Issue 2 indicates it is doing whatever it wants.

Is there a reason why? Do they require separate licensing?

The best answer they have given on the IDW forums is this:
Bobby Curnow on the subject of Red Bamboo wrote:There's sort of a grey area as to how much we can directly reference characters and events from Toho films that are not directly licensed by us (i.e. the monsters). In short, we can do minor nods and homages, but not use those things as major plot points or important characters.

but for the most part they just say "No"

But Legends 3 remains the odd man out since they included both the Black Hole aliens and an actual character from the series
Bobby Curnow wrote:Don't expect to see any human characters directly from the films in the ongoing. That's actually something we're not allowed to do. Was able to squeak in Miki in Legends #3 as a 'cameo'.

I'm telling you, casual readers are going to keep dropping off like flies the more they realize how connected Rulers of Earth is to the previous ongoings. I personally am really enjoying this series and I think each issue so far has been better than the one before it, but each issue has also featured explicit references to events and characters from the previous ongoings, which is just unnecessary.

Rulers of Earth is soooooooo much better than either Kingdom of Monsters or its inexplicably nameless follow-up. They're shooting themselves in the foot by actively tying this series to those lackluster blemishes.

^ I agree. I do think there have been a few subtle jabs at the previous series, but it would have been nice to forget about the previous runs altogether. This is the first time in a long time that I have been anxious for a new issue of the ongoing, and thats exactly the kind of feeling a monthly should have. It may only get 8 issues, but i think when fans look back 5 years from now, Rulers will have its place right next to Half Century War as being series that are worth tracking down.

Whoa!! The trade of issues 1-4 isn't out until December?! That's the same time issue 7 or 8 (final issue) will be out... That leaves no possibility for people that trade waited to jump on... Or even for sales numbers on trades to come in...
IDW is missing an opportunity here. Image was pretty successful with jump ons for Fatale, Saga, etc by releasing the collected trades before the next issue in the series... And Image included bonus material **cough-cough**

I remember saying the same thing numerous times that both Godzilla and ROE did not need to be connected to the awful KOM story line and that it would be best for IDW and readers to just move on and forget Powell/Marsh's putrid mess forever.....only to be told it was "no big deal" and that I was "making a big deal about nothing." I think it is indeed a big deal that has really hurt these ongoings over the long run as is evident in sales...KOM turned off a ton of fans; furthermore, I don't think it's even necessary to have this connected in all one established plot...just gave a quick throw away panel or two saying something along the lines of "Godzilla and co. have terrorized the world since he first appeared 60 years"....bam, done.

It's a real shame too... aside the awful GINO/Shere Khan/Scar issue, I have really enjoyed this new series so far, and it deserves more readers that what it's receiving thus far....IDW seems to have finally figured out how to do a decent ongoing series...but it may be too little, too late.

At first, I thought this was a Zornow cover, but I notice the name Tramanto on the cover. Has he worked on a Godzilla book before? It's a very nice cover.

I'm also really digging Franck's incentive cover for issue 4

I think it is a Zornow cover and Tramatano is just taking over colors from Pattinson

Yeah, on that Jet Jaguar cover you can see "Zornow must be destroyed!" in the rubble down and to the left from Godzilla's hand.

Priscilla Tramontano did the colors for Godzilla: Legends #4 and Rulers of Earth #3. It looks like she'll be back for #7, and they misspelled her name on the cover.

I'm pretty sure Frank's covers are the regular editions and Zornow's are the incentives, hence why the comic shop I've frequented has never had any Zornow covers. For issue #4, Frank's is the one drawn from Destroyer's POV and Zornow's is the one that includes Mothra.

^Yep. The art is much better in this and the battles are fun. It's a shame this isn't how IDW started the series. With the new Godzilla coming out next year, I'm hoping they can do a relaunch or something. I've always been a fan of Frank and his Goji drawings - I hope he gets to continue doing them.
