Gorgo and Konga

Postby klen7 » Thu Oct 18, 2012 8:20 am

I guess this is as good of a place as any to post this, but IDW is releasing a collection of the old Gorgo comics! Sounds like they will be releasing Konga after that... I'd love to see Reptilicus more than the others, but this is still pretty neat to be able to get these in a collection.

Oh, neat. Not a huge fan of Gorgo or his movie, but this might be worth a read.

Very cool that IDW are releasing some stuff that otherwise would have been left forgotten. I've never read either book and don't know much about them.

And oddly enough, I've never even SEEN Konga.

The original Gorgo is easy to recommend a look see.

Konga, OTOH.......only if you've bought the double feature dvd with Yongary, have already watched Yongary, and have some time to kill. If you're in the right mind for a bad B-movie, I *guess* its not a bad choice. Not that Yongary is a jewel either, but at least its more of a traditional kaiju flick.

I really enjoy Konga, but think it works better as a Mad Scientist movie than as a "King Kong" substitute film. Most of the movie is the biology professor being a letcherous old man, growing giant evil plants, and sending his pet ape to kill his rivals -- in love and work! The giant monster fireworks don't start until very, very late in the picture, and then it is mostly green screen stuff. Fun, but definitely not the same as the detailed miniature work of a Toho film.

Great news about the Charlton Comics reprints! It will be nice to be able to collect them without having to sell a kidney to get all the back issues.

I remember being so confused by Konga. I thought it was a Kong ripoff, but it's so much more bizarre than that, or it seemed that way when I was 7 years old.

Here is a cool cover from the series
Image

At the end of the story, Konga tackles Uuang-Ni off of a cliff and they crash into the Pacific Ocean. After an underwater battle, Konga emerges victorious and swims back home to England.

But Uunag-Ni fans claim that Konga was running away at the end. They also claimed that in the South Pacific version of the story...Uuang-Ni wins!!!!

:P

BTW here is a 1966 truck commercial featuring Konga

You guys are making me feel guilty for slamming Konga now. I fully admit to laughing at the Konga references and pics above.

I decided its going to be a selection in any future viewing poll I do.....with Yongary, of course. :D (provided someone doesn't beat me to the punch!)

HOLY CRAP! I just just ordered a bunch of the IDW Godzilla paperbacks(catching up) and noticed the GORGO and KONGA books on Amazon. Pre-Ordered! This is awesome stuff! IDW might not be doing a great job with Godzilla, but they've done some stuff right, and this can also be checked off in the "doing it right" category.

Like someone else said, hopefully a Reptilicus book will follow shortly.

I saw some interior pics, and it looks like some of the movie storyboards are included in the Intro. :D

So I just got the Gorgo release.... Incredible detail, highly recommended, I dare you to pick this up off a shelf and not buy it. I will post a review and pictures when time allows, but I definitely wanted to sing its praises based on my first impressions.

If there was any doubt I'd pick these up it's been dashed what with me going gaga over Steve Ditko in my recent sampling of old superhero comics. It may sound like sacrilege, but I think I prefer Ditko over Jack Kirby (who's also great, of course).

Any details on when the Konga release for this is going to come out??

(i can't say enough nice things about the presentation and how well the Gorgo book was put together... its a great book for people that like books, yet alone comics)
