Let's talk about Ultraman Manga!

So there is totally a metric crapton of Ultraman manga out there and most of it looks pretty awesome, in addition to having introduced a lot of major elements of the M78 lore that we take for granted in the post-Ultra Galaxy Legends world. Long before we ever got to see the CGI wonderland that is the modern Land of Light, inhabited by the cape-wearing Ultra Brothers, the comics built that reality first! I mean, sure, you get to see the Land of Light in Ace and Taro, among other series, but the visuals we see in Legends primarily take their cues from the manga.

Unfortunately, I haven't gotten to read a ton myself. One of my biggest regrets from my last trip to Japan is that I didn't buy more books and that goes especially for manga collections. One that I DID pick up, however, was the first volume of a totally awesome retelling of the original Ultraman series called Ultraman the First.

It starts off with a bit of a recap of Ultra Q, more directly tying it into the creation of the Science Patrol and the events of Ultraman. Then it jumps straight into the action. It's fairly faithful to the original series at first but it starts making some cool changes pretty quickly (not that the original series NEEDS changing but it's still fun!). Firstly, Ultraman's color timer going off is portrayed as being extremely painful to Hayata, which I thought was an interesting concept. Then the Baltan arc is portrayed in a more dramatic tone than the more humorous TV version and Fuji is the one Baltan possesses, briefly turning her into a pretty badass-looking villain. After that it really starts to mix things up by merging the Neronga and Ragon episodes into one story, with the final battle being a three-way brawl! Ultraman has to take on both monsters while still trying to keep the nuclear bomb attached to Ragon from going off! It's pretty crazy.

The whole thing is very well paced and the artwork is very elegant. I love the style and I'll have to crib more from this artist in my future artistic endeavors! I'll try and post some more images a little later!

So let's talk about Ultraman manga!

Sounds awesome! And are you aware of new manga in Japan that's supposedly "Updating" Ultraman? I heard about it on Henshinjustice's forums...

And I love the idea of Ultra Q being direct cannon/ prequel to Ultraman :D I like the concept of a world going to hell with giant monsters and then Ultraman arrives....

You mean 'ULTRAMAN BEGINS,' yeah? Apparently Takeshi Yagi had a big hand in its conceptualization and plot. My understanding is that it takes place years after the original Ultraman left Earth.

Love the thought of a mecha version of Ultraman constructed by the Science Patrol!

Back to Ultraman the First, here's my favorite image from the first volume:

Evil! Fuji and Baltan facing off with Hayata!

Here's another volume I found that I really, really want now: It's called "Fuji Akiko Story ~Ultraman's Work Unknown Episodes~" I'm not ENTIRELY sure what it's about except it seems to take place at least partially behind the scenes of the series' filming and Hiroko Sakurai herself had a hand in its creation. The art style looks really nice and I LOVE how derpy Hayata looks on the cover.

Yeah, it looks like they're both cowering in fear together, probably from the Giant Fuji up there.

I just find it amusing that the guy with the ghetto booty is hugging the guy with the chocolate starfish mouth.

Okay, one more post about something I really want to see and then I'll talk more about stuff I've actually gotten to loo through!

Decisive Battle! The Ultra Brothers:

I've been coveting this tome for some time now. It's a collection of some 530 pages of Ultraman stories, all drawn by artist Shinji Imura. I know very little about him, just that his art looks most excellent. All of the stories were serialized in the late 70s and 80s. Don't know much about them except their titles:

• Decisive Battle! The Ultra Brothers
• The Great Ultra Monster War
• Fight! Space Garrison
• Famicom Ultraman: The Kaiju Empire's Counterattack
• Ultra Seven: King Zetton's Revenge
• Famicom Ultraman 2: Ultra Monster's Great Decisive Battle

The two "Famicon Ultraman" stories are apparently adaptations of Ultraman games for the original NES.

Here are the few interior images I could find:

Best I can tell from this image is there's been a battle between Baltan and Mephilas, which is then crashed by Hippolito, who sneak attacks Baltan and destroys him, except it was just a copy and Baltan starts screwing around with Hippolito. Love it.

There's another collection by the same artist that I'm slightly less interested in but I would still love to get my mitts on because I'm loving what I've seen of his art. Like Ultraman the First, it's a little cartoony but still very clean with wickedly-drawn monsters.

Ultraman 80: The Great Space War/The☆Ultraman/Ultra Seven:

This is also another 500+ page tome, this time covering primarily Imura-penned stories of Ultraman 80 and Ultraman Jonias (The☆Ultraman), with some Seven stories thrown in for good measure. These are also late 70s/80s serials. Here are the story titles:

• The☆Ultraman
• Ultraman 80
• Ultraman 80: The Great Space War
• Ultra Seven: The Four-Hundred Year Revenge
• The Forty Thousand Year Silence

Jesus, these titles are AWESOME. Here are the interiors I've found for this book:

Yeah, so if anyone knows anything else about these books - if you can provide more images or simply recommend them, I would be much obliged! They look amazing and I'm fully prepared to drop $50 on one of them if they're as good as they look!

If he's supposed to be a mech inspired by Ultraman then I like it...if it's supposed to me an actual Ultraman then I'm not a huge fan of that design...too busy and mechanical

Dude, he's got the Science Patrol logo on his neck. Pretty sure he's a mech. XD

I hope so...

In that case...I look forward to seeing how the real Ultraman reacts to his mechanical double...would he be happy or a little offended?

By the way, I found a pretty good resource for Ultraman Manga scans. It's NOWHERE NEAR complete but there's a fair amount. Say, 20-odd volumes from various series. Mind you, none of it's translated into English (though I've found some Chinese and Thai scanlations! XD) but the pictures are still pretty! PM me if you're interested, anyone.

EDIT: Added another image to the last ULTRAMAN BEGINS post I made. Looking awesome!

Apparently, the pilot of this Ultramech is Hayata's son!

EVANGELION is Hideaki Anno's inverted version of ULTRAMAN.

So, the Ultraman in Begins isn't really an "Ultraman" but a mecha constructed in his image?

And worn/piloted by Hayata's son, I believe.

The only Ultraman manga I have are the VIZ Battle of the Ultra Brothers. These all look awsome!

Anyone have any pics of any of the monsters spawned from Baragon? I.E Neronga or Gabora?

That was The Ultraman (no relation to the first anime Ultra Series of the same name), done by one of THE Ultraman mangaka, Mamoru Uchiyama. It was published in 1979, IIRC.

VIZ only published a fraction of that series.
