IDW Godzilla Previews

Postby Eleking » Mon Apr 18, 2011 12:08 pm

I figured the other thread has become the place for reviews and opinions, so here's a thread to feature previews for future issues.

Tiny image for cover to G&G 2:

SOS Godzilla and Mothra from what looks like...

I for one like that they are forcing different artists, or...allowing them perhaps...to use different interpretations of these characters...does the over 50 years of history for these monsters justice..

I don't know if I've ever found a Mothra design to be worth getting up in arms in either direction about within the Godzilla-verse (in the RoM series, there's plenty to dissect...)

I mean, even the plush-toy Heisei version and GMK's plastic-toy version are more about the EXECUTION and CREATION of the design than the concept of the design itself...

It's a small pic, but I think that the colors look really beautiful.

Yeah, a lot of these covers look really great. And, as King_Ghidorah said, I'm glad we're getting a kind of variety with the versions of the monsters we see.

Closer image of Gangsters & Goliaths issue 2:

Not huge on this image, though the colors are really pretty. Better than Geoff Darrow's cover though. Blech!

Now, issue 2's B-cover, on the other hand, HOLY GOD. D8

Image

Hot damn! I WANT THAT ONE.

And here's some work from Victor Santos, the artist who will be taking over the artwork duties on Kingdom of Monsters from issue 5:

Those G&G covers are fantastic!!

And Victor Santos...

That silhouette and most of the panels looks great and really stylized! But damn if that isn't the ugliest closeup of Godzilla's face I've ever seen....

That is a pretty ugly Goji face...

The only problem I have with the first cover for issue two is again, the face on Godzilla looks pretty bad..someone hire Bob Eggleton or Art Adams please.

Cover B looks awesome.

And yeah, Santos is going to take some adjusting to. What an awkward/ugly Godzilla face!

Yeah, but this looks a bit more off in that there doesn't seem to be a curve to the beam. Looks weird.

Santos seems great apart from the eyes... I think they're too human.

I'll start...

Angilas also comes out of the sand? The fairies are beret-wearing school girls?

More dumbassery. What's Japan going to do to the monsters this time? Launch a strand of anthrax? Is Angilas going to stomp kittens just for the sake of being badass.

:P

Anguirus looks awesome and I like the new take on the Mothra twins.

There, I said it.

Sometimes I wonder what Toho is smoking when they approve this stuff.

Then again, they did approve GINO. And GFW.

Anguirus has a weird shot.

Mothra twins cover looks sweet though.

Anguirus isn't coming out of the sand, he's coming out of the ground, a la Mechagodzilla 74. Remember all that DUST he kicked up though? Yeah.

The monsters appearances so far seem to be homages to appearances they made in the movies. Godzilla from the sand (MvsG), Anguirus from the ground (MG74), and I assume Rodan will be similar. Maybe he'll come from a volcano or the side of a mountain.

That's a pretty loose interpretation of the word "homage." I don't think this comic nor its writers are near as deep as you give them credit for...

Especially if they feel the need to dramatically change the twin fairies after 50 years of consistency.

They may be French, but they're still 2 twin girls, so that must mean that they're paying homage to the original Mothra

Yeah. Just watch. Baragon is going to make his first appearance by falling out of the sky or something.
