Kong: Skull Island Toys/Merchandise Thread

Postby The Great MM » Wed Sep 07, 2016 3:40 pm

The movie is starting to fast approach us. Nothing is confirmed yet, but I think now would be a good time to just start speculating what we might end up getting and what will bleed our wallets dry.

I, personally, am crossing my fingers for a NECA, SHMA, and Jakks Pacific Kong. Bandai vinyl (either BC or MMS) would be welcome too, but I'm not holding out for one... yet anyway.

The only thing we seem to know so far, assuming it's not some deception, is that Randy said NECA isn't doing a Kong. Which, no matter what one thinks of the NECA Godzilla line, is tragic as Luca proved they could definitely handle a figure of Legendary Kong.

Man, I'd love for one of the Japanese companies that make stylized vinyls to do a Kong,

There've been some excellent Marmit-style renditions of both Toho Kongs ('62 & '67) as well as multiple variants of Mechani-Kong (with or w/out bomb belt for example).

Sadly they all seem to be quite rare and expensive these days.

My personal favorites were made by "APES". They came out in 2005 I believe.

Good luck finding them now...

You remember those foam Hulk fists that came out? I want some King Kong equivalents.

With less than five months away from Kong: Skull Island I feel that if there are gonna be toys we should know about 'em pretty soon, right?

Well, we're at the four month mark now, the trailer's given us a narrative that would work perfectly for toys, and a bunch of other characters, and nada. I almost, almost wish it was Playmates over the complete lack of anything we have right now.

Dagnabbit.

Well, I bet the 'Art of' book'll be awesome, if the PacRim and Godzilla '14 ones are anything to go by.

After Peter Jackson's King Kong came out in 2005, I saw leftover merchandise from that movie clogging up shelves at Target and KB Toys for years, at least into 2007. I'm guessing it didn't sell particularly well, and that retailers are wary about stocking any Kong-related merchandise again, and that there probably won't be many Kong toys to tie into Kong: Skull Island as a result.

Surely with the popularity of their pacific rim toy line and their successful G'14 figures, NECA must at least have a Kong figure or two in the pipeline... surely.. right?

A wide-release kid-targeted toyline isn't a given these days like it was in the '90s and early '00s. If WB is holding out for that they should just relent and sign a more collector oriented company like NECA.

Since it's supposed to be part of the Godzilla 2014 Universe and all, I would think Bandai Creation would have licensing for this film as well.

I don't believe Toho is distributing Skull Island in Japan so that might be another determining factor. They love merchandising Godzilla of course but Kong isn't their character and has never really been a franchise proven character despite remakes and whatnot.

Kong (and Godzilla) make decent Funko Pop! figures. I think only certain things lend themselves to the format, mostly cartoon characters who's simplified designs can be easily lent to the simplified figures (Adventure Time characters, for instance). The Pop! for The Gill Man is pretty awesome, too.

Since Funko does retro style toys I'd love to see them to a Shogun Warriors-esque line.

^ despite being into designer vinyl I never got the Funko aesthetic. I was talking to my friendly local comic shop owner yesterday and he mentioned that sales for them have really dropped off and he thinks they're on their way out.

^They're a fad, but I'll always love my set of Adventure Time Pops.

The market for Funko Pops are over-saturated. They will be off shelves this time next year.

The closest I came to getting one was Space Ghost. It was almost kind of cruel to see the sgc2c logo out of the corner of my eye and then realize what it was.

Well, we are getting a Skull Island toyline! It is indeed a line tailored for kids, with monsters, soldiers, and vehicles.

I mean, I'd prefer a more adult friendly Kong toy (and I don't think it's out of the cards for one some company to do one later) but I think kids might dig this: it seems to be following the lead of all the Jurassic Park toylines.
