NECA Exc#1: Johnson, what do you have for our next figure in our video game line?

Johnson: Well we already have our horror tie ins, Freddy and Jason. Along with installments in the Aliens and Predator series. And our recent hit with the '98 Batman. So I present to you, from the NES classic Godzilla: Monster of Monsters.... GODZILLA!

NECA Exc#2: Is that just out 1985 figure with a repaint?

Johnson: Well, we only have public feedback from three figure and the 2014 and 1994 figures both had too small of heads. And it's not JUST a repaint. We got tons of feedback from the fans about the figure having small spines, so we ripped those out and replaced them with the comically huge NES spines. Now they have absolutely no reason to complain.

NECA Exc#1: But what about our 1956 figure? That's him on the box cover of the game isn't it?

Johnson: Yes, but that's not the design that was used in the game.

NECA Exc#1: So the 1985 design was used in the game?

Johnson:.... not exactly. It looks more like the suit from Mothra vs Godzilla.

NECA Exc#2: So you took one of our worst received figures gave it the wrong spines, pixle painted it a horrid aqua color, based on a sprite that isn't even based on that suit?

Johnson: Yup.

NECA Exc#1: Johnson, this is unacceptable. How can we release a figure so horrible looking? Go back to the drawing board and get a new sculpt. The RIGHT ONE THIS TIME!

Johnson: I'm sorry but that can't be done.

NECA Exc#2: Why the hell not?!

Johnson: Most of this year's budget went into securing the rights to the likeness of Sigourney Weaver and an inordainment amount of work on making sure the upcoming hypersleep Ripley has the proper amount of camel-toe.

NECA Exc#1: Oooooh. Right, right. Yes.

NECA Exc#2: Ah, okay. Sure. Very important. Camel-toe.

I agree, the 54 looks odd. The face seems like it was changed from the prototype to a pic I saw on one of their website banners a few months back. Neca's Godzilla's offerings really suck outside of their G14.

Maybe the 54 will be ok. Maybe. But this NES figure?

I love that NECA can release so many variations of predators and aliens but they can't figure out the difference between one Godzilla and the next.

Even NECA can't get G85 into a position that doesn't look like he's trying to take a crap.

If they wanted to do a video game version with the 1985 figure they could have gone hog wild with the spines and made this.



That'd make sense.

But I guess they might just do that with the 54 design or what ever the next one after that is since they have no idea what the hell they're doing I guess.

There is something about the G54 figure that I don't like. I can't say what it is but for some reason I have this odd feeling of not being liking it.

The NES Godzilla is the kind of figure that looks good from one angle and a few feet away. The idea is fantastic - the execution leaves something to be desired. The 1954 figure's proportions are wonky, which isn't anything new with NECA's figures, but it's promising. Shrink the head, lengthen the legs, and move the legs a bit higher up on the waist, and, even if it's not perfect, it becomes something I would like to buy. I don't like to judge these figures harshly, and I'm not much of a collector anyway, but it's not the prices that deter me from getting them.

I think the '54 is actually looking pretty good. That headsculpt looks great. I think what's killing it in this video is they have it in an awful, terribly awkward pose. Like they just grabbed it out of a junk box and threw it on the table. Look at the way the legs and arms ar twisted into terribly unnatural positions. I think if just a little care was taken to put it in a decent pose we'd all be singing it's praises right now.

As for the NES figure... Ugh. I would LOVE an accurate figure of this. Monster of Monsters was my introduction to godzilla that got me into the movies. And I think they absolutely nailed the paint job and center row of fins. Why they had to slap it on to the already wonky G85 sculpt is terribly perplexing and disappointing.

So... my 6 inch tall NECA Godzilla 2014 is relatively new to my collection (less than a month), and something just seems off about the sculpt when you're looking at it dead on. From a profile, the figure looks amazing. I've head nothing but amazing things about the sculpt of this guy, but the head just seems to damned small (I saw someone online use the term microcephalus). The 2014 already has a semi-small head, I feel like the NECA kind of takes it a step further. It doesn't help that the face isn't that well detailed.

Any one else think the NECA sculpt isn't all that it's cracked up to be?

For my money, the 2014 figure to buy so far is the Bandai Creations standard figure. The Bandai, while not accurate, is kind of fun in it's own way. I feel like the Spitfire Godzilla, and especially the X Plus, will be my go to G 2014 figures in the next few months, but for now, the best version of this Godzilla can be bought for less than 10 bucks.

Yeah the head size isn't as bad as the Japanese Bandai but I prefer Japanese Bandai figure (I think it's just because I'm nostalgic for soft vinyl). I'm happy to have both for now. I can definitely imagine a day where I part with the NECA figure though.

The 12" NECA figures are finally appearing in my area. The local Toys-R-Us had about 10 of the 85 figures and 8 of the 2014.

The 2014 figure looked much better in person but the 85 version is a turn off with the body design.

I actually stopped by TRU today, and wow they were stocked up on Godzilla figures. They even had Jakks and Diamond in addition to the Bandais and Necas.
