Weekly Character Spotlight #9: Godzilla 2001 (GMK)

Postby gforever » Sun Jan 27, 2013 8:30 pm

Hi all! For this week's spotlight, we have the one and only pupil less white eyes Godzilla from the 2001 film, GMK (Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant-Monsters All-Out Attack). To start things off, here is the CCP GMK Godzilla figure. Look forward to seeing all the different GMK figures!

One of my top 5 Godzilla suits, and one of my favorite Bandai standard size figures:

It's funny, I really like the GMK suit and yet I have only one figure of it. The standard Bandai is just so well done that I've never felt the need for another version of this guy. Although the M1 has tempted me a few times.

The M1 is my favorite as well. Here's mine pictured with a couple other figures for comparison.

The standard Bandai is really excellent, too.

There's the one I had and wish I hadn't sold.

If there's one thing I don't like about this suit though, its that sometimes it has a real undead zombie look to it. I don't mean just the eyes. The stance and paunch make it look a bit sickly. I know that's the point, but I like the more upright poses. Btw, anyone ever try coloring in some pupils?

Not nearly as good as the last one I posted, here's the oddly proportioned Bandai Creation take on GMK Goji:

Our cat, Linus, is not impressed by the sculpt:

I definitely went through a GMK Godzilla phase, so i have more of that suit than any other, but hands down my absolute favorite is the 25cm X-Plus release... it isn't hunched over like the 30cm release, so it somehow highlights everything i like about the suit and brushes over the things i like less... anyway, to each their own

Yeah I agree about the 25cm figure being better than the X Plus 30cm.

And you guys are making it VERY hard not to dive into the M1 collecting pool lol!! I only have one M1 figure currently, Guilala, and it's solid...a thing of beauty.

Side note, I think I prefer M1's to Marmit's...but I prefer Art Storm to them all! :D

So this is Bandai Polystone Series M-1... i was looking forward to this series since it was from Yuji Sakai, but this figure (which i got MIB) has the worse slop of any figure i own... bad slop on the fins and bad slop on the face... i've seen others over the years that looked fine, so maybe i just got unlucky on this one... otherwise, its a nice dynamic figure, destruction and action all in one shot

This is the Bandai Polystone Series M-2... i got this at the same time as the M-1... another fun sculpt since you get a bit of action with poor Baragon getting stomped

Here's another from Yuji Sakai... Real Product Stage Godzilla Complete Works 1

The water in the base is translucent, which makes it look pretty slick under light.. Definitely my favorite of the smaller scale figures

Love all those Sakai diorama's, especially that last one with the translucent water. Nice touch!

It's a really slick figure... I think Yuji Sakai's "Godzilla Dream" picture book has some good pictures of the full size sculpt in it... maybe i'll link in an image to that later.

Here is another curiosity... it LOOKS like a Hyper Godzilla 2002... but upon closer inspection, it seems someone used that as a mold and made a rubber version which they then slapped a great paint job on and then added a nice base for it to stand on... it is a really striking figure, and as far as i can tell, its a one of a kind "knock off" that is way better than the original

Although, a couple of days in, we're still only on page one of this thread.

Just seems like we're racking up a lot of pic already. I've noticed the Godzilla threads seem to sky rocket...in particular the 62 and 62 threads and that's not surprising seeing as how they're both fan favorite suits.

So far, all 4 of the Godzilla suits that have been chosen have been among my top 5.
