Interesting topic, and I have a lot to say on the subject. I'll try to keep it short.
I used to look at my collection very much as an investment. Of course I enjoyed it like anyone else would, but at the same time I wanted to lean more towards pieces that would go up in value. I would go so far to buy old/new figures for the sole purpose of turning around and flipping them for more money. I would get a figure in the mail, and then mail it out again 2 days later to someone else who bought it for more than I paid for it. I did it a bunch. I was making money, I was cool with it.
And as an "investment" - it was nice knowing that at any time, if I needed to in case of an emergency, I could sell off my collection and be okay. Lots of times I would get a bunch of stuff, then when something cooler came out, I'd sell some of the old stuff and use the money to buy the new stuff. Some people know my collection used to change all the time because of this. It was still collecting just like anyone else - I just didn't want to amass a big collection that I didn't have room for.
But eventually, I decided to get out of the selling game (we still talking about figures, right?), and start to get a more firm handle on my personal collection. I don't really buy figures for flipping purposes anymore, unless it's some kind of crazy real quick profit. I've actually taken a loss selling a lot of my stuff lately, because I just wanted to get rid of it to make room and money for my new personalized collection.
I don't know where I'm going with this so I'm going to end this here. I'll just say that flipping figures is sweet and you can totally make some money on it (most of the flipping was on non-kaiju stuff). But eventually you get tired of doing it and just want a small nice collection for yourself, not caring about the worth. But it is nice feeling to have if you know these hundreds of dollars of pieces of plastic you own are actually worth something.
