It's really X-Plus who dropped the ball here, and in many infuriating ways. The necks and legs have very shallow, glued-on attachment points, and nothing on the figure is assembled like a typical vinyl toy. So one good knock and pieces are going to snap right off and have to be re-glued. And because a very good chunk of the figure seems to be made of a more rigid material with almost no give, kiss those horns goodbye if you ever bang into them. And that's nothing compared to the plastic wings, the tips of which seem to be unbelievably fragile. The wings themselves seem no more sturdy that the cheap plastic ones that came with the Bandai Great Monsters Ghidorah from 1984. And on top of that, the way the wings attach is a little on the half assed side. Each wing gets two small pegs that fit into a plastic assembly inside the figure, and in my case (and many others) the left wing did not want to stay in with heating up the vinyl around the insertion points and moving it aside to give the wings a more snug fit. But even after that, I didn't feel the fit on either wing was all that tight and I really worry about what's going to happy when gravity wins out and those wings slip out. Since I don't have a place to display the figure at the moment I ended up removing the wings to be on the safe side. I've heard people say that you could just glue the wings in, but to me that just kills the resale value and would prevent me from disassembling the figure for storage or sale if I ever needed to. I don't think permanently gluing the wings to a $300+ figure is a good solution.
So you've got a highly fragile figure. How do you box it up? Why, in nothing but a plastic tray and thin cardboard box of course!! Yes, that makes far more sense than encasing the figure in some sort of foam to protect it. People can blame Ami Ami all they want, but plenty of people got broken figures from other sources. And this figure seems so fragile that I can't even blame them being shipped overseas. All someone would have to do is drop the box and this thing would break. And that could happen even in Japan.
Does the figure look incredible when assembled and displayed? Of course it does. But something this expensive and hyped shouldn't have these kinds of problems. I've seen several people already who have seen what others have had to say about this toy and said they were glad they didn't order it. That's a shame.
