Bandai FRANKENSTEIN, Sanda and Gaira!

Postby Baltan II » Mon Jun 19, 2017 6:53 pm

Can we please talk about the fact that, although an exclusive, Bandai is actually providing us with something unthinkable for some time now? It is unfortunately a Premium Bandai exclusive, but these days I suppose that's hard to avoid when a monster like Gaira is too easy to think of as being a hard sell to the mass retail audience. Here's to hoping Gaira is successful enough to warrant more Showa love and attention.

Also worth noting is that Gaira is 18cm tall, so don't expect a perfect fit next to some of the 8" Bandai toys, but it might be passable. Gaira retails for 3999 yen (heh) and ships in September.

OOOooooh - so, I'm assuming 'Premium Bandai' means it's available just from their store and other distributors will buy it and mark up the price double or more?

Pretty much. I forget, are you familiar with the Tamashii Webshop? That's a subset of the Bandai Premium site. Orders are open to the public. You'll see resellers with these and some online stores may get a noticeable quantity too, but Japanese customers will generally order them directly.

Never thought I'd see modern-day Bandai do this guy! Pity he's an exclusive. Hopefully they do Sanda next!

And...

WHERE'S OUR SHOWA KING GHIDORAH, BANDAI?!!!

Not to mention Megalon, but c'mon.. Showa Ghidorah is so iconic yet is grossly under-represented on vinyl.

SUPER COOL !!!!!!! I hope the prices are not crazy like the Banpresto stuff. If they are $100 I'm not touching them. I can see that happening.

They're ¥3999 each, so about $40 a piece. But the caveat is that they're exclusive to some bandai store or something, so they're not quite as easy to get. I think most people are expecting to pay close to $80 a piece to get them in the U.S.

Looks like Amok Time has them for preorder at $75 each.

$80 each sounds a bit high for the cost of middlemanning these. Granted, my source for Bandai exclusives is a friend with relatives in Japan, but even if I was going with some of the other well-known services out there I feel I could do better. I feel like that's only the going price you're more likely to see from the companies or individuals that aren't placing large orders with Bandai on a regular basis for the various Tamashii Web exclusives and such.

Much better results could be had if only the likes of Big in Japan had their own listings for the Gargantuas up, but proxy shipping options are still very much a possibility with a lot of those sites.

Pre ordered my set for $115 total from a shop over there. Not bad considering postage included. Just about $35 over SRP maybe

Saw these at G-Fest in person. Incredible level of detail in the sculpt. Hopefully the final product is just as good.

Very happy to hear that they were at G-Fest. It annoys me how G-Fest keeps coinciding with TFCon, but all my friends go to that and Canada is generally cheaper... one of these years though, sure.

I put in an order for these through a dealer on Facebook. I believe said dealer also had a Bandai contact who mentioned Oodako, Varan, and Mechanikong as future possibilities. :o

I can't believe it. We're getting Frankenstein?! I never saw that coming in a million years!

Judging by his pose and what happened with Sanda and Gaira, I bet this is building up to Baragon coming as well.

According to August Ragone there may be a Giant Octopus or possibly Baragon coming too. And FCTW is coming to blu ray in Japan in November!

Has anyone received theirs yet, from anyone. What was the release date for Gaira? I ordered both but my seller is most likely waiting for Sanda to mail together. Wasn't it this week? The 10th maybe. I sent them a message wondering when they may be getting them.

Gaira was supposed to be released September 26 while Sanda hasn't been given any date aside from "October". I'd expect towards the end of the month.

Yup, I got my Gaira a couple of weeks ago, so it's been out a little while. Very nice! Looking forward to Sanda later this month.

Spoiler Below:
ImageImageImage

Bandai hit a home run with Gaira. Sculpt and paint details are both excellent, capturing the image and spirit of the suit (and actor) while retaining a toyish charm. Yes, the arms can move. Gaira stands about 6.75" tall at the head, so he's pretty big compared to MMS Bandais, but he fits pretty well with larger figures.

I'm excited for Sanda!

^Considering that the Gargantuas are canonically smaller than your typical kaiju I think the match nicely with those bigger Bandais!

Technically he’s still too large. But he’s really close to in scale with that banpresto Godzilla ‘54, seeing as Godzilla is 50m and Gaira is 25m tall.

It is a really nice looking figure. I’m not a huge WOTG fan, or at least not enough of one to spend the effort and cash to track these down. But I think it’s really cool that bandai made them, and even cooler that they put the effort in to make them so nice.
