Yeah, mentioned it in the wish list thread. Basically, it's being done through Sony's equivalent of the Warner Archive; available online but not through regular retail. Hope it's good!

^ Don't know. I certainly hope they're in the pipeline. I really want to see the non-Godzilla Toho genre films on Blu.

It would have been nice if Sony had just recreated their Icons of Sci-Fi DVD -- but as far as bringing in the money it makes sense for Sony to wait and release Mothra either when Godzilla:King of the Monsters hits theaters or whenever it arrives on home video. Releasing The H-Man alongside G:KOTM might be the best bet to increase sales for that movie; fans of Toho sci-fi will pick it up regardless but being able to slap a sticker on there that says something like "From the creators of Godzilla" should be helpful.

So are they like going to actually say anything about this release or do they just expect us to blind buy it and find out first hand how the quality is?

Does anyone know if this Sony imprint does sales like Warner Archive does from time to time?

I just picked up four Warner Archive releases, for $44, with free shipping during their sale.
I don't have much interest in paying top dollar for these archive imprint releases that are typically a tad on the pricey side for what they are, but for $11, I was on-board. I'd be on board for this Sony thing around that same price point.

So is this worth picking up or should we wait for a potential H-Man/Battle/Mothra BD set?

Dubtitles? Sony can shove this release up their ass!

I expected as much - same as Icons release. Won't be a problem for the other two movies, as their subs were accurate. Unfortunately, Battle's US cut synchs up with the Japanese one, making that possible. H-Man and Mothra were pretty reedited, so dubtitles just weren't feasible as a cheap option.

Such a waste though. Why even bother going through that effort to get permission to release it on BD if you aren't going to put quality into your release?

Permission? Dude they own the movie.

Yes this is disappointing. I’ve heard that later pressings of the Icons set had accurate subtitles in addition to the dubtitles, so someone dropped the ball here. I’m not as disappointed about the transfer being the US version, however, as that means we have one classic American release preserved in high definition.

My reaction to this being dubtitled is "oh. okay"

If I wind up seeing this for cheap enough, I'll still get it.

I won't. I thought the movie was crap, but that may have been due to the dubtitles pulling me out of the immersion. I was willing to give it a second chance if it had real subtitles, but I just have no interest watching it again without them.

Didn't expect this of all films to get the Blu treatment! Not sure if I'll buy only because I haven't re-watched it that much.

I really hope we see THE GIANT CLAW in HD at some point from Columbia/Sony.

Blu-ray.com's reviewer is unaware of the dubtitles issue and gives the disc a solid review, saying that the transfer is solid despite frequent print damage (pops and scratches):

Yeah, like... literally? That's not a word you can really just throw around these days.

They treat everyone like dirt on their forums. They don't like it when you disagree with their reviews. Their reviews are made to make a sale rather than being legitimate. Their scores don't make sense either. Not to mention heaven forbid you praise a Funimation Blu-Ray release or don't talk "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" about Viz's Sailor Moon quality.

Hell, one of their mods decided to stalk me on my Youtube channel telling me to kill myself and he dislikes every video of mine the moment I post it. I stopped going to that site a few year's back because I hated them, at least for discussion. The only reason to continue going is for the custom cover art topic where you can get some really kick ass covers other users made.

I just lurk there to keep abreast of what's coming out. Different reviewers have different standards of judging things like picture quality, however, it feels like the best laid out and most user-friendly site for gauging the quality of releases. There are other sites that go into more technical details, but that's all Greek to me. And other sites make egregious mistakes as well.
