Ahead of their Shin Godzilla screening (with Higuchi as guest!) Famous Monsters of Filmland spills the beans and says that Funi's home video release of Shin drops in August!

^It originally said August, and either there was a miscommunication or someone said something they shouldn't have because they went back and edited it.

I think they want to save it for the official announcement later this month at the convention.

I couldn't wait any longer for Funimation's announcement and went and ordered the R3 DVD. I figure it'll hold me over til the U.S. Blu-ray comes out.

Or very own GMAN said something on his twitter to the extent of "I can't confirm or deny the creation of original special features," referring to Funi's release of Shin Godzilla. It's got me thinking: if Funimation has limited access to Toho's special features but wants a lot of extras for their release what could they whip up themselves? I suppose they could make footage from the red carpet premiers as well as Higuchi's upcoming panel into featurettes, as well as Funi's original trailers.

Bummer that the Japanese release gets 4 discs packed with extras and we get a "Godzilla vs the Nerds" featurette. It is cool that we are getting BD and dub, so i shouldn't complain too much.

Any word on whether the movie on Funimation's BRD/DVD will include the same updated effects shots as Toho's Japanese home release or if it will be identical to the theatrical version? I was thinking about getting the Hong Kong BRD to have the original theatrical version but if that's what we're getting in North America then I'll just wait. I'll be getting Funimation's release either way.

While it sucks that we aren't getting the features Toho released, it's not surprising either given it's Toho. They live in their own world.

What bothers me is the listing for the audio being 3.1. That is a typo right? I mean, the movie was made in 2016. Who the hell would use only three channels in the modern age? I hope that is supposed to be 5.1 like it was in the theater because if not, that is down right retarded.

Both audio tracks on the HK blu ray are 3.1. I only have a 2.1 setup, so I have no issues with it. No doubt there will be grumbling though.

The 3.1 Japanese audio track is also on Toho's original Japanese Blu-ray.

Who wants to bet the 'MA' rating on the back of Funi's box art is just a placeholder on the style guide and doesn't reflect the movie's actual rating?

Looks like the Madman release will have at least a few of the Japanese extras:

And according to the specs of the Funimation and Madman releases that just went up on the news page, it looks like the Funimation release is slightly cropped too, whereas the Madman release isn't (2.39:1 compared to 2.35:1 respectively):

Either way the Madman release is the same region code as the UK, so that's the one I'll be getting. Finally, after waiting for over a year for an apparently non-existent UK release, the time has nearly come for me to actually see this for myself!
