I'll be skeptical of this until I have a copy in my hand. Especially with both versions included...

Outstanding! Nice to have the dub version as well. G85 will likely be lost to time, I for one will shed no tears.

Woohoo!

I'd love for the American edit to be included, but it's not a deal breaker for me. Kraken's previous releases were solid, and hopefully we'll see more from them.

Well, it's been 31 years since New World released Godzilla 1985 in North American theaters. Maybe whatever contractual reasons Toho had for withholding the film from home video distributors no longer apply because enough time has passed for those original contracts to expire?

Is Anime News Network normally a reliable news source? I can't find any official announcement from Section23 yet.

Happy Dance for RoG. I wonder if G'85 has been the only version stuck under the legal red tape this whole time?

ANN is reliable. However... I'll curb my enthusiasm until I see/hear more. I would have expected Son Of Godzilla & G vs MG before this one (other Showa titles Kraken easily could pick up from Sony), but hey....I'd take the long shot before the most likely any day. Also I have my New World VHS, digital backup, and a few other copies in various formats of Godzilla 1985, so the fan community can keep it alive even if it never sees a legit release anytime soon.

I hope and pray they release Godzilla 1985 with this. This is the version I really want on bluray.

Another website looks to have a proper press release by Kraken/Section23, on top of ANN generally being a reliable source. I almost feel like I recall a similar issue the first time around with Kraken Releasing's announcement of their first Godzilla movies seeming less than transparent because sites got press releases before they had a real web presence or something, but I could be mistaken there.

Toho doesn't separate licenses for different versions of their movies. They've refrained from licensing The Return of Godzilla to any home video distributors in the U.S. because of contractual uncertainty. The specifics have never been made public and there have been lots of rumors swirling over the years, but what we do know is that Toho has been sitting on the rights to the film until they were positive that they could license it without violating their old contracts.

If this news is true, since it's 2016 now, my guess is that New World's original agreement with Toho gave them North American rights to the film for 30 years from 1985. Now that we're past that threshold, it would seem that Toho has made the film available again and Section23 has snatched it up under their Kraken Releasing label.

Great news. Aside from the Criterion release of G54, Kraken's releases were the cream of the crop in the first wave of Godzilla blu-rays.

SWEEEEEET!!!

Glad I held off buying a Blu-ray bootleg of this. EDIT: Guess we won't be seeing that HD print of GODZILLA 1985!!??

I hope Kraken gets around to securing SON OF GODZILLA and GODZILLA VS. MECHAGODZILLA. Their other Goji Blu-rays are wonderful!

Raymond Burr was always a defender of Godzilla. Though G85 was not a great movie, at least we can defend that this version to be included in the package, otherwise it really would not seem complete.

I think G85 has importance as a historical item, and I don't want to deny anyone the chance to buy it. But I never understood why New Line felt they had to make those changes. You're just driving up costs on something that has a pretty low return to begin with. Before today, I thought it was like KKvsG where Universal owned their cut for perpetuity, and Toho couldn't release their cut, but who knows?

Perceived marketability in the United States. They wanted to do something similar with what had been done with the first Godzilla film. New World possibly surmised that just straight dubbing the film (or using Toho's dub) would not generate mass appeal in the United States.

Though for us alive at the time, they did a heck of a job marketing this film, and I guess it was *profitable* in the end, even if by the slimmest of margins. We know HD quality prints of G1985 exist (as seen on Monsters HD), its just a matter of, if it will ever become available for purchase. The initial ANN article says RoG only, but I guess in a few hours we'll know for sure.

**Man the fandom is fast, someone already updated the G1985 wikipedia page with the release info heh...

From August Ragone:

Kraken's press release mentions, but does not name GODZILLA 1985, which has been embroiled in an on-going dispute between Michigan-based home video label, Anchor Bay, who grandfathered the rights to the localization, and Toho International, which disputes those rights. Previously, Anchor Bay released that version on VHS, but subsequent plans for DVD and Blu-ray have been stymied by Toho.

In Kraken's press release, GODZILLA 1985 is downplayed as a "highly edited version that cut over twenty minutes of original footage and effects, changed key plot points and altered the dark dramatic tone and narrative by inserting additional scenes and humor in an attempt to 'Americanize' the film." And without addressing it directly, intimate that this version will not be included in their release.

Great news, and yes, after a long time, finally we're getting a Blu-ray and DVD.

Wow, awesome news. I was just watching the Toho bluray of this today while feeding the baby a bottle.

I have to say, I hope they have access to a better transfer than the one used for the Japanese disc. While that bluray is the best I've ever seen the film look on home video, it's still a LOOOONG way from actually looking good. In fact, it's one of the worst looking BDs in my collection (not THE worst, but certainly in the running).

And please please let the dubbed version they mention be the American cut! We know a decent transfer of G'85 exists thanks to Monsters HD!
