Show us your DVD/BD collection topic

Postby Dr Kain » Tue Sep 16, 2014 7:15 pm

Got a great movie collection? Why not share it with the rest of us?

If one of these already exists, sorry, but I couldn't seem to find it.

Anyway:

Nice pics, Kain.

I really like this idea for a post, so hopefully more people will share their collections. I love looking at stuff like this.

Unfortunately, I can't right now with my living situation. Not that I'm in a bad situation by any means but I live in a small house and share it with two room mates and there simply isn't anywhere in this place where I can display my collection. My collection is GIGANTIC and there simply isn't enough space anywhere in the house where I can fill a wall with shelving units. All my stuff is in boxes that I have to dig through whenever I wanna watch something.

However, if you just wanna see my collection, I keep it catalogued on Film Aficianado (its a great site and I'd recommend anybody start an account there). Here's my collection, in digital list form:

Pretty nifty collection Kain.

I'll probably take some pictures once I get my collection in display shape with my new shelves...

^On the note of blind-buying...if you think about it, a movie ticket costs at least ten bucks...so if you're going with a date, you're going to spend at LEAST $20 to go to the theater. OR you could just buy the movie for $20, and if you don't like it, sell it (and you're gonna get more than $4 for it if you sell it early), and BAM! you just spent $10 on something that would have cost you at least double that to see in a theater.

It's why I don't understand why home video sales are flagging...it's cheaper to watch at home (well, I actually do understand why sales are down...people just wanna sit at home with their $8 Netflix subscriptions and watch South Park episodes over and over until their eyes bleed)

This is ONLY my Godzilla stuff...and not on a shelf...

I'll take pics of my collection later. My stuff is all in my game room, outside my theater on wire racks I bought YEARS ago from Blockbuster.

I'll take pictures of my collection when I get better shelving.
Also even if certain formats go extinct it doesn't matter to me. I still collect VHS tapes for their covers for crying out loud.

Also have a huge blu ray/dvd collection is aesthetically pleasing to me. I like thumbing through my collection. It helps me decide what I want to watch more than Netflix as the organization is set up how I want it. I have genres clustered together, specific actors/directors clustered together and then movies ordered by release date because sometimes I'm in the mood for something specifically from the 60/70/80s but don't have anything specific in mind. Also there are some super low budget independent movies out there that are top notch quality but only had a limited amount of discs pressed and will probably never been shown on TV/HULU/Netflix/Prime so if you didn't get one of those 500 DVDs that were made, you will probably never see that movie again.

Even though I have no intention of selling most of my movies unless I upgrade, I do have movies I paid ~$20 for that are now worth $80-100 so some movies can increase in value.

I was taking pictures of my (rather healthy, imo) toy collection the other day and my genre films are integrated into the display. So these pics weren't specifically taken to show off my movies, but you can see them in there.

and we've got more movies in that little white bookcase in the hallway back there

Some people enjoy collecting things, I don't see what's wrong with that. I myself collect movies, and it's because I like movies and I like owning physical copies of them, simple as that. I have no intention of selling anything, so I don't care how much it's worth.

The whole streaming argument, as has been mentioned physical media has advantages over streaming. You get superior quality, and it's more reliable. You don't have to depend on your internet connection or the distributor making it available for streaming at all times, when you own the disc it's there for you to watch whenever you please, and it could last you decades should you want to hold on to it for that long.

Alright CHILDREN.

I like the idea of this topic, otherwise it would have just been locked. I cleaned up the thread, deleted posts, and I've PMed the people involved.

First, last, only warning: it's NOT okay to mock people for what they choose to collect. Likewise, it's NOT okay to skirt the language filter, and I'm VERY MUCH going to be inquiring as to the possibility of adding ""OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!"/retarded" to the language filter from the admins, as it's basically NEVER okay to use.

Play nice or the thread will be locked and responsible parties will be allowed to enjoy a one week vacation.

EDIT: If there are any thoughts, concerns, questions, etc on this, feel free to PM me. No need to post any more on that here. But you are obviously ENCOURAGED to remain on-original-topic.

A couple years ago Netflix posted on their blog the bit rates they actually use. It may have changed by now, but as the ISPs really haven't changed the way they provide internet service I'm doubtful Netflix has improved their bitrates.

What it comes down to is that yes HD content streamed from Netflix is HD in resolution, however the actual bit rates (the ultimate limiter for picture & audio quality) that Netflix uses for their HD content is the same as that what you get from a DVD (appox. 5-6 Mb/Second). For example, WB's latest home video releases for King Kong (1933) runs an average of 5-6 Mb/sec on DVD and generally runs about 30 Mb/sec on Blu-ray.

I will most likely NEVER switch to streaming and "The Cloud" for watching of anything except clips, trailers, an occasional YouTube vid or whatnot. I live in the boonies and it is highly unlikely that the powers that be will ever be installing cable out my way nor putting additional towers close by. As such, it only makes sense to stick with physical media. I recall folks saying that VHS tapes would die and be unplayable within 20 years of purchase but I still have a high quality JVC tape deck and tapes that are well over 30 years old, many are extra-long BASF T-160 tapes that I recorded crappy old Z-grade sci-fi junk on in the EP mode. And you know what? They still play just fine. Similar statements have been made about the longevity of CDs and DVDs (and now Blu-rays). I doubt seriously that they will degrade enough to notice in the course of MY lifetime. Also, I take VERY good care of my stuff, don't loan it out to friends (got burned on that a couple of times - never again), nor leave it lying around out of the case or off the shelf - unless it's being played. I'm pretty sure that that goes a long ways towards their lasting.

I didn't mind the switch from VHS to DVD since the media is far more compact and waaay lighter! LOL! (I donated a bunch of pre-recorded tapes to the Goodwill the other day and that box weighed a TON!) I held off on switching to Blu-ray for quite a while but after seeing the picture quality difference alone on a couple of films, and then the price on players continuing to fall, I caved in and am so very happy I did. I can still enjoy my older DVD stuff AND now delight in the picture and sound quality of newer F/X heavy modern films like AVENGERS and GODZILLA, as well as lovingly-restored classics, like the recent restored Blu-ray release of "The African Queen" (WOW!) and others, which are just plain awesome. Blu-ray media has come down a lot in price and the quality, for the most part, is so superior that I have no qualms about upgrading if I have already have a title on DVD. When I am occasionally lucky enough to score a really odd title that comes to either DVD or Blu-ray that I previously never had (or only on an old video tape, like Zaat! or Octaman) it's like Christmas for me! LOL. To each his own though. As a major movie buff, but especially of older stuff (pre-70's), any and most all older, obscure sci-fi, I have taken to hunting and digging to get my mits on some fairly odd stuff. It's kinda fun, actually. And I have pretty much obtained the vast majority of my childhood through my movie and especially TV show collection. I can't even begin to put a price on the importance of that to me. You younger guys, as you get older you'll understand and appreciate that.

I guess I just like the idea of being able to decide on a movie and go right to watching without waiting for loading time, worrying about burning through the bandwidth limit on my (sorta lame) satellite internet, and not have to wait for buffering, freezing, etc. Plus, I don't have to worry about a storm/bad weather or poopy connection at the other end ruining my rare free evening of vegging out with some good (bad) old monster movies or whatnot.

Wow, nice collection Jinzo.

I see some Charlie Chan; fun fact for those who don't already know, Keye Luke (number one son, in several films) went on to be the first actor to play Kato on film (in the Green Hornet serials), and much later in his career also played Master Po on KUNG FU and was going to play Noonien Soong in STAR TREK:TNG but illness prevented him from taking the role.

I don't see them from in the pictures, do you have the Mr. Moto sets as well?

Thanks for the kind comments. All it takes is money, space and time... LOL.

Klen7-
I bought Lancelot Link as a Christmas gift for a friend years ago but foolishly did not get a copy for myself. I may ask him for it back, since his kids are much older now and I doubt he's watched any of them since the rugrats hit high school age.

Kain-
Yeah, I have ALL of the releases from Generation Kikaida. Sure wish they'd do more, but with the continued reports of the downward slide / "death" of physical media, it may be off-putting for a small company like JN Pro. It would be so awesome to get all of the Showa-era riders in legit R1 subbed quality releases. I'd also like to pick up Inazuman Flash. Alas, it may never happen. BTW.. Kain, I see a LOT of tokusatsu in you vast library that I do not have. Please PM me regarding subbed stuff, especially Showa riders and sentai. THX. :-(

Shadow-
I picked up the Chanthology on a whim and fell in love with Charlie. I think I have all of the current box sets available, but I'm not 100% sure. There are only, (again I think), four movies left in the enitre film series that are not in these sets and they are all from the Roland Winters-era. The movies are short, fun and keep you guessing. I would make a crummy detective since I have about a 1in 5 success rate figuring out whodunnit! Another fun fact, Keye Luke also when on to actually voice Charlie Chan in the HB series Charlie Chan & The Chan Clan. I don't have that show. I also don't have any Mr. Moto (Peter Lorre) or Mr. Wong (Boris Karloff) in my collection - yet. Eventually I'd like to. The CHAN box sets are nice but space wasters; one 14mm case per film! Ugh! I was able to use PictureIt! 7.0 & 2005 Photoshop to make labels that allowed me to condense the big sets down to one 14mm 4-disc pack per set. A nifty space savings. Speaking of space, that SPACE:1999 set is next on my radar. I'm going to split each season into an 8-disc case that'll probably reduce the shelf size by... 90% or so. I'll take pics of the before and after. :-)
