And didn't Tull & Edwards both say that there would be some deleted scenes on the home video release? At a bare minimum, Akira Takarada's deleted cameo should have been included on among the extras on the home video release.

And yet there's a whole bunch of fans out there that think the whole Takarada affair is all about nothin' (me not being one of them). I think it's a matter of disrespect to the man all for the sake of the editors to keep the film near the two hour mark. A shorter film does not always make a better one.

I understand Takaradas scene no quite making sense, and was cut for theatrical and home video...surely though they know many of us would have wanted to see that in a deleted scenes section.

I'm gonna assume that there's going to be another release before Godzilla 2 comes out.

I can not believe that a scene lasting only a matter of seconds could possibly disrupt the pacing. I also think that it meant something to Mr. Takarada to be included in the film at some level or he would have never brought it up not to mention going out of his way to fly all the way to Canada for the effort. Point is, it meant something symbolic and historical for him to be in it.

I can't seem to find a free bluray player so I had to download a trial version. Here are the picture differences from my computer. I wont be able to watch the JP disc until the weekend but so far from what I can tell, there is no insert scene so that can be laid to rest. Then again, I'm pretty sure that wont stop fans from being fans..........

I have to wonder if the difference is real, or is this a case of the fact that the differences between calibration standards for U.S. vs Japanese tvs (that normally makes japanese home video releases look washed out and faded on american tv's) making the picture seem brighter and easier to make out?

In other words, does this release look just as dark on a japanese tv as the american bluray looks on an american tv?

For some reason, I can't get the comparison images to load, but I own the Japanese Bluray as well and I honestly couldn't tell a difference on my tv. Both transfers seemed the same to me.

Anyone seen the HBO version? It's certainly far less dark on my TV.

A co-worker of mine finally rented this movie (due in no small part to the fact that I have a poster for it hanging up in my office), and while he said it was a deffinite improvement over the 98 film....he complained that he couldn't see a damn thing in the final fight. Picture quality was too dark.

I still maintain that the picture quality was much too dark for this film's video release. I know some people like Mouth4War claim otherwise, and that may be true for tuned up tv sets but for the mass majority of casuals this release was sub-par. Bums me out...still waiting on a better release

It is really strange that the home video release is too dark for so many people. Especially when the home video release for Pacific-Rim (at least the Jaeger-Kaiju battles) is just a little lighter. I saw PR in both normal & 3D showings and could clearly see more when I first watched the blu-ray -- most notably the distinctive bands on the kaiju (easily seen on the toys, but I didn't see them in either theatrical cut).

I can only imagine how frustrated people who watch Godzilla 2014 for the first time on home video are with the darkness problem.

It's funny this thread came back up as I just watched the bluray again myself two days ago. And I was again flustered by the transfer. It is so unbelievably dark. And having a calibrated tv doesn't make it better. If anything it makes it harder to see what's happening. I actually watched the movie with the brightness and contrast boosted from my normal settings and it was much more palatable. But that shot with Godzilla roaring while holding the severed MUTO head was still so dark it was nearly indiscernible.

And once again, after watching the movie I switched back to my normal calibrated settings and skimmed through a bonus feature that had clips from the movie, including that same shot after he blasted the final MUTO. It was vibrant and clear as day (well, night... but you could actually see all the detail and work the FX artists had put into the shot, unlike the main feature).

So then I put my tv on one of the pre-programmed "torch" modes (in this case the "GAME" setting) and watched that scene again from the main feature... And viola! I looked almost exactly the same as I the bonus features.

It almost makes me believe the video transfer was done to intentionally compensate for the fact that way too many people out their leave their tvs on the out-of-the-box torch mode. 'Cause the bluray looks great on my tv in torch mode -much more like what I remember in the theater (where the brightness of the image was never an issue). It's not the first time I've suspected a home video source was tweaked for the uneducated who leave their tv in torch mode. We watched the entire series of 30 Rock on Netflix a couple of years ago and several of the middle and later season looked AWFUL all faded and washed out and bland. That is, until out of curiosity I flicked my tv to torch mode and suddenly it looks perfectly normal with natural color saturation and good contrast.

Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll release a better transfer when the sequel comes out? I'd hate my theory to be right and find out those if us who actually properly calibrate our equipment are getting screwed for the "benefit" of the ignorant masses.

Since Warner Bros. is releasing "Man of Steel" and other films on remastered 4K Ultra HD blurays later this year, I imagine we will be getting another release of this film soon, hopefully.
Actually just purchased and new 4K 60 inch and this was the first movie I watched on it and I simply thought the upscaling on the tv made this movie look fantastic!
