Not a nice thing to "joke" about but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt since the quotes may have been taken out of context.

It's a wonder any of the English speaking actors in these Japanese films had any idea what was going on. I imagine the experience could have been disorienting for any of them.

Shows the skill of the Toho crew that these movies work well across the board (barring Russ Tamblyn's steadfast refusal to act).

Wasn't 47 Ronin filmed with a cut where everyone spoke in their original languages? (slight tangent, I know...but interesting to think this is still happening today)

A few updates on some recent topics...

Last week I had a long talk with a friend at Toho. Since the rights to KING KONG VS GODZILLA have been a popular point of discussion lately I asked about this film and KING KONG ESCAPES. Toho reiterated what they had told me years ago: Universal has ownership of both movies -- including the Japanese versions -- in perpetuity in North America, and Toho has no rights to market or distribute any version of these films in Universal’s territories.

I also spoke with a friend at Sony Pictures who has handled many of their Toho titles, and he elaborated a bit on how Toho would license their films. In general, when an American company or licensee bought a film from Toho they would have the option to dub and edit the movie however they thought best for the American market. That's how we got Americanizations like GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS and GIGANTIS THE FIRE MONSTER (Toho has changed this policy more recently, as Sony had to get Toho’s approval for all of the changes they wanted to make to GODZILLA 2000).

While they could edit and dub the film, the buyer wasn’t required to do so by Toho before they could release it in America. Using MOTHRA as an example, my friend at Sony said that Toho delivered the Japanese version to Columbia when they bought the movie in 1961 and (direct quote) “Columbia certainly had the rights to put out the version of MOTHRA that they received from Toho.”

And, at the risk of beating a dead horse, I also have an update about the German DVD release of KING KONG VS GODZILLA. Tyler recently shared some information he said he got from Ingo Strecer, who worked on supplemental materials for the Anolis steelbook edition of the film. As proof that he had been in touch with Mr Strecer, Tyler posted the following screenshot of his email account…

TylerPreston20 wrote:Image

Tyler posted the same on the blu-ray.com forums, but one of the other members there pointed out the Ingo’s last name is actually spelled ‘Strecker’ with a ‘k’, which raised red flags that this was another 'John/Jon Mulvaney' incident.

Through friends in the German Godzilla fan community, I was recently able to contact Ingo Strecker and ask about this. Today he wrote me that he has not corresponded with Tyler and did not write the email in the above screenshot.

Just curious: is the Japanese cut of KK vs. G on the German DVD any better than the (crummy) transfer on the Toho DVD, or is it the same ported over?

Lulz. Either Ben Wagner is playing him like a fiddle again or he's just making more crap up... Tyler is either horribly gullible or a gigantic troll. Either way, I wish he'd stop bringing that kind of nonsense into the threads here and derailing them into obnoxiousness.

So in other words, it is clearly in Universal's hands now as to whether or not we will get Japanese versions of these two movies. Great.

How do we know if Universal still possesses the original Japanese prints to these films or not? It may be that all there is remaining is the American versions.

Universal didn't produce the American version of King Kong vs. Godzilla (John Beck did) so I'd guess they don't have the Japanese version of that one. They did produce Escapes, however, so that could be a different story.

This was already covered in this thread. Universal owns the rights to the Japanese version of KING KONG VS GODZILLA but doesn't have any materials so, if they ever wanted to release that version, they would have to go to Toho for a new interpositive or HD clone.

Rankin/Bass produced the American version of KING KONG ESCAPES.

After roughly 50 years, I think it's pretty clear that Universal has no interest in the Japanese version of either film, so I doubt we'll ever see a release from them that contains both versions of either film. But it does seem that Universal is open to the idea of sublicensing their films (e.g. the 1998 Goodtimes DVD release and the German Blu-ray of GODZILLA VS KING KONG). And using the German Blu-ray as an example, it seems that Toho is also willing to give a sub-licensee a print of the Japanese version of KKvsG.

So at this point, I doubt we'll ever see Universal release both versions in the U.S. (or other territories for that matter), but we could get such a release from another company. So the question at this point seems to be; who is willing to sublicense from Universal and buy a Japanese print from Toho? I hate to say it, but after what happened with Criterion's GODZILLA release, I wouldn't be surprised if no one has any interest handling KKvsG or KKE.

Kaiju fans are not big in number. Plus the fact that not every kaiju fan wants all Japanese originals.

I don't think that was really his point. His point was that it's not going to happen because Universal is too big to have any interest in doing it properly and any company that would maybe attempt to do it properly wouldn't want to after the insanity that surrounded the Criterion release that had the company pretty publicly lamenting the insanity and ingratitude of Godzilla fans.

I can't really blame them, I mean... the furore that erupted over that was downright embarrassing.

I imagine it was the combination of jumping thorough the hoops with Toho only to be met with such ingratitude by fans left a very sour taste in their mouths.

If I ever were to get involved with some commercial Godzilla project remind me to completely ignore the fans.

Actually, that is what I had intended about Universal and their lack of interest (but probably should have worded it better).

And with this packaging nonsense, if there is one person who should be upset in in the past with design and packaging is me!

First we get this:

Yep, my mistake. I forgot that Arthur Rankin, Jr. was the "Producer/Director".
