Finished the sets: excellent. The movies look spectacular. I've read about a few minor glitches (in the first film, I think?), but apparently they were in Shout's releases as well, so it must be inherent to the sources given by Japan. A couple of minor subtitle glitches, but between 8 films collectively it's pretty negligible. Better than Shout's.

In short: get these releases. Even if you're not a big Gamera fan, if you're a kaiju fan this is a great deal and it supports a great company which will hopefully keep releasing these types of films.

^For the price too, it's pretty spectacular...I got them for $12 for each blu-ray. That's amazing. (as opposed to the MSRP which I think was like $21.99)

Just received these in the mail today. Gamera and Gamera vs Viras are beautiful prints, far better than what I was expecting. The only thing I wish these prints had though was an English dub in addition to the native Japanese language. The Showa Gamera films usually aren't serious enough that I care about listening to them in Japanese. I usually throw movies like these on for background sound while I am doing something else like working out, cleaning, cooking etc. Since I'm not fluent in Japanese this means I can't half heartedly follow the films. Also since these are mostly kid films, I feel like not providing dubs locks out most of the target audience.

I'm legitimately thinking about selling these and using the money to get the last Shout! Gamera releases I need, so I can have dubs....I am finding Gamera doesn't hold my full attention for long enough for me to enjoy subs...ESPECIALLY the really awful films like Viras and Zigra and Super Monster

The first two Shout! discs do NOT have dubs. That's the difference.

I just bought the DVD set and I noticed the subs are really bad on Gamera 3. There are tons of lines that are not subtitled! I think I read somewhere back on this thread that Mill Creek was offering replacement DVDs for Gamera 3...did I read that right? Anyone know if they are still doing that?

I recently upgraded to a new 1080p HD set (retiring a nearly decade-old 780p clucker) and today I popped in Mill Creek's Ultimate Gamera Collection vol. 1 and it's practically unwatchable due to fuzzy horizontal lines that appear whenever the majority of the image is dark. I certainly didn't see this when I watched it at a lower resolution over a year ago. Popped in vol. 2 and it's fine.

This can't be normal for this release? I have a bad copy, right?

Pretty sure I never noticed it, and I watched it on a 1080p projector.

Then again, I DID fall asleep a couple times, because subbed Showa Gamera just doesn't hold my interest as much as dubbed.

Is it every movie on the set, or just one particular movie?

Every movie, but especially noticeable on the first movie, as it's in black and white and usually pretty dark.

^Maybe we got ones from a defective batch? I'm reading Blu-ray.com's reviews, and while they criticize the transfer in detail they don't mention the effect we're seeing.
