Blu Ray Wish Lists

I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and go for the Japanese Blu of King Kong '76 for Christmas. I want to watch it before Skull Island, and while Paramount has started releasing catalog Blu-Rays again and may very well announce the US release tomorrow I doubt that it'd differ in the transfer and special features that are on all the foreign releases.

Is that set actual 4K UHD blu rays or just standard 1080p discs sourced from a 4K master?

Well, if it's a true 4K UHD disc, you'd have to have bought a new UHD player to play it...

Yes sir that is correct. I am currently fixing up my basement for my "theater" which is two recliners and as of right now a projector. I have the speakers and receiver now cause they were on sale.

The projector I am looking at isn't a true 4k projector because the real 4k projectors cost at a minimum of $10,000 from Sony. It uses some pixel shifting thing and I haven't had a chance to go to the store to see it in action. So it can use a 4k source but it can't give you a true 4k image I guess. I will be getting a blu-ray player to upscale things as well.

This little project only took about 10 years of saving.

Looks like an extra special Christmas for me this year! Never thought I'd ever see this! SASQUATCH is one of my all-time favorite fright flicks. If you haven't seen it, it's worth a spin. Done in a pseudo docu-drama style. Some creepy scenes and a few that'll make you jump, plus some stunning cinematography of the Oregon Three Sisters area. Wow. After owning this in a crappy bootleg for years, then a halfway decent legit DVD that I figured would be all there'd ever be. Sure hope the Blu is a solid transfer. ENCOUNTERS WITH THE UNKNOWN is a title I'd never heard of before now, but with Rod Serling's involvement plus some great B-film thesps in the line up it certainly sounds like a winner.

Twilight Time's 3 Worlds of Gulliver is now up for preorder. With One Million Years BC coming in February we'll soon have the complete Harryhausen on Blu. All that's left is WB and Gwangi.

Uni's It Came From Outer Space, previously a Best Buy exclusive, becomes wide release in February.

Best Buy is still selling It Came From Outer Space for $7.99, and they have free shipping right now. If anyone is interested in picking up the movie I'd suggest going ahead and ordering it from Best Buy, I would not be surprised to see the movie jump back up to $10+ when ICFOS enters general release.

That's an awesome price, but I know I happen to have a copy under the tree already. Hope it sells well enough this holiday season to inspire Warners to release the 7 Marx Bros. films they have.

I'm surprised at the number of negative reviews on Amazon for this set. Not the films themselves, mind you, just the remastering. Some rabid Marxists have taken issue with a lot of the 'restorative' work, insisting that essentially nothing was done and that the films look no better here than they did on DVD. I'll admit there were some jump cuts in one of the films (can't remember which one at the moment), and a few soft focus snips here & there, but I cannot say in comparison to other release versions. Not having any of these films in any format, I was delighted and thought they looked quite good. I'd be interested in hearing what the rest of you think once you've viewed them yourselves.

^The really noticeable jump cuts in Horse Feathers? Unfortunately that scene was censored beyond all get out in theatrical rerelease and the original version still eludes us. Turn the subtitles on in the scene where the brothers keep barging into Thelma Todd's room and get all the lines of innuendo that were snipped out (thankfully we have the script, if not the footage). The amazing thing is that they did manage to find the original, uncensored version of Animal Crackers (which was similarly censored) for this Blu-Ray, meaning this release is the first time in almost 80 years we've seen the complete version! If these people were hardcore fans you think they'd say the release was worth it for that alone?

They don't look pristine, but I have the old DVDs and they are pretty dang bad (when they were released in '04 people commented how bad they looked!) and I've looked at plenty of screencaps to say that this release is far superior. Unfortunately, we're dealing with the flaws of the only sources available. If they used digital trickery to unnaturally spruce up and sharpen the image you'd have just as many people complaining about the overzealous remastering eliminating the natural 'filmic' look.

I may not be a big fan of the movie itself, but the Japanese Blu-Ray of King Kong 1976 gets a thumbs up for me. It's a transfer done several years ago, but it still looks pretty good. If you're on the fence I say go for it.

The Japanese disc is actually the same disc released in several other countries. When the disc loads it allows you to select your country and you should select Japan because they're in our same region and while the movie is region free the special features are not (they're PAL), so you select Japan to see the special features; a BTS retrospective, deleted scenes, and trailer.

Rumor coming in that Shout Factory has licensed the classic Pink Panther movies. Huge if true: one of my most wanted things on Blu-Ray.

Since Shout is working with MGM for The Pink Panther it'd be quite awesome for them to negotiate for the three Toho films they have: Gorath, Human Vapor and.... uh, what's the other one? The Last War? Telegian?

Does anyone know who has the license for 'Planet of Dinosaurs'? I asked on Shout's FB page if they could look into getting it. I watched my old Goodtimes DVD during Halloween and that film is in desparte need of an upgrade. I know Retromedia put out an upgraded DVD 10 years ago but I haven't heard much on it. This year would make perfect sense to do a BD because its the 40th anniversary.

Coming February 2017 to coincidence (or perhaps counter) Ray Harryhausen's "One Million Years B.C. This will be the international version (which states, does contain nudity).



Now this poses a couple of questions. For sure, I always thought this would be the fourth film included when Warner Brothers eventually releases their "Special Effects: Volume 2", which might include "The Giant Behemoth", "The Black Scorpion" and "The Valley of Gwangi". That still might be in the plans. I think this is just Warners taking advantage of the release of "B.C." that same month.

^ WOOHOO! I don't care how they release them or what order they do it in - I just want these movies! And considering the Archive's penchant for releasing similiar movies in groups (like film noir, Bogart and Becall movies, or Audrey Hepburn movies) we might be seeing some other interesting titles soon.
