Godzilla KOTM... from the Criterion Collection!?!?!

Postby Joseph Goodman » Tue Jul 05, 2011 9:50 am

On Hulu, at least:

http://www.hulu.com/watch/254170/godzil ... e-monsters

I wonder if this means that a Criterion DVD/Blu-Ray is on the way?

Back in '98, Criterion had announced laserdiscs of a few Godzilla films, but those obviously never panned out. If they released a disc of this film to the same standard of quality as their "Seven Samurai" Blu-ray, I think a lot of fans would be pleased.

Oh my gawd, I hope this happens.

That's a neat, minimalist cover.

Rialto Pictures holds theatrical rights to GODZILLA. Classic Media has home video and TV (and they just showed GKOTM on TCM). Streaming rights were separate so Toho could (and apparently did) offer them to other licensees.

Also, I hate to seem like I'm badmouthing Criterion here but...

would a DVD from them be THAT much better than the already excellent Classic Media DVD???

I kinda doubt it.

A blu-ray...well, that might be a different story, considering CM's BRD is mediocre

Are you actually joking? A Criterion DVD of any Godzilla film would blow the crap out of every Godzilla DVD released so far.

not at all...i couldn't see anything being offered in a DVD of Gojira/GKOTM that would make me want to replace my Classic Media DVD...

as I said, a good blu-ray might be a different story (MIGHT)

Have you seen Criterion's SEVEN SAMURAI transfer? With the effort they put into that, they could do wonders with G54. The black bar across the top would be gone, the digital fades would be gone, etc.

Yeah, I think the CM DVD is great but it could definitely still be improved upon.

As much as I love Criterion, if were to be just the Raymond Burr version and not the original, I would pass.

I love the Classic Media disc, but yes, a Criterion edition would blow it away.

If you're not familiar with how much work Criterion puts into their DVDs, there's lots of information online about what they can do for a movie.

This is Hulu stream is the same master as on the 2006 Classic Media DVD, with no Transworld logo, and the end credits tacked on in the wrong place. Criterion hasn't put any work in to this, yet, apparently (would they even do so for a streaming only product?).

I was talking to Criterion in late '93 and early '94 when they were planning at 40th Anniversary release of the Japanese version of GODZILLA for Laserdisc. So, whatever is brewing here (if anything at all) has been a long time coming.

50th anniversary in the 90's for laserdisc? Someone had high hopes for that format.

At the screening of Godzilla that I attended earlier tonight at Ohio State University's Wexner Center for the Arts, one of the Center's directors mentioned in his introduction that he had recently been to Criterion's main office and had seen cover art for a potential DVD/Blu-ray release of the film from that company. Since Hulu has been showing the Americanized version online through Criterion, it may be that he saw something related to that and was mistaken. It may or may not be totally reliable, but I thought it was worth sharing what the gentleman had to say.

A Criterion release is feasible -- it depends on the rights agreement that Classic Media came to with Toho. If CM is able to sub-license the movies, then they just have to work out a deal with any interested party.

I can certainly see where Criterion would be interested in doing a release of Gojira. Hopefully this theoretical release of Gojira would see G:KOTM receiving similar treatment in the same release.

Awesome, I guess the criterion is more likely than I initially thought.

Criterion has posted a photo of a Japanese film can on their Facebook page.

The title translates as . . .

[dramatic drumroll]

Awesome news, I saw the pic. Though I wonder what it may be used for; If they actually do a DVD/BD release I hope they use Toho's new master, not another film transfer.
