I decided I won't be keeping Starz after my trial ends. My cable promotion is up in March so I'll see if I can work a deal with them that'll include the Gold package plus I have a feeling that if Janus/Criterion does indeed have home video rights and not just streaming rights then they'll put these out on BD/DVD when Godzilla 2 or Godzilla vs Kong comes out to cash in on the hype.

Janus confirmed to Gormaru Island that they do indeed want to pursue other avenues of releasing the Godzilla films they own other than just Starz. Hopefully that means a BD release in the future.

If they eventually release any physical media, I reckon it will be in sections rather than the entire group all at once. The first batch of movies would be released prior to "Godzilla 2" (GKOTM, GRA, Rodan, Mothra v. Godzilla). The second batch right in between "G2" and "G v K". (Ghidrah, Monster Zero, Gargantuas, Son of Godzilla). And the third batch, right before or during "G v K". (DAM, Revenge, Gigan, Megalon, Mechagodzilla movies).

I don't know, they had no issue releasing that 25 film Zatoichi set all at once, which would be 2 movies shy of the entire Showa/Heisei/Millennium Godzilla cycle, so who knows. Personally, I have my fingers crossed for a Showa G set plus a separate Toho Kaiju/Sci-Fi set with Rodan, WOTG and the Media Blasters/Tokyo Shock library.

BUT, I also hope that someone with the means to do so is capturing and archiving these HD copies just in case...

I just started my free starz trial on amazon. I don’t recall anyone mentioning it, but they’ve also got Godzilla’s Revenge subbed in HD.

Just watched Rodan tonight. Best looking version of it I’ve ever seen.

It kinda sucks because there’s absolutely no way I’ll have time to watch all these before my free trial runs out. But I’ll definitely enjoy what I can while it lasts. Criterion and/or Janus films, PLEASE PUT THESE OUT ON BLU RAY!!!! Please please please!

So I contacted Criterion and quite literally begged them to put these out on Blu-ray. I just received a response today. Most of it is promoting their own streaming channel subscription, but here’s the pertinent parts:

“Thanks for writing and for your interest in these Godzilla films. We’re excited too!

These films should all be available for streaming on the Criterion Channel on FilmStruck (www.filmstruck.com) in December, and we hope to release them on Blu-ray and DVD at some point but they aren’t yet on the schedule. The best way to stay up-to-date on our future release plans is to check our "Coming Soon" section and e-newsletter.”

And apparently filmstruck offers a TWO week free trial. So I’ll try to get through what I can with what’s left of my free Starz week, then I’ll cancel that and get the two week filmstruck trial in December and finish off the remaining ones. Yay!

I'll be as patient as humanly possible if it means Criterion does new scans on the level of their Lone Wolf & Cub set, instead of getting stuck with Toho's 2008 transfers.

What could be the equivalent for Godzilla? Mechagodzilla schematics?
