I just checked the thread on Blu-Ray.com again. I was mistaken about the error being with the OVAs, it was the extras that displayed incorrectly on the original Gatchaman set; the extras were stretched to 16:9 and that issue was fixed on the new set.

That's it? I mean, I could understand if it was the show itself, but I don't see the point in getting worked up over the extras being cropped.

The stretched video on the extras wasn't the only issue, but the subtitle font for the show itself was slightly larger than normal. Some of the text would cross over the edge of the picture at times. It might not be a big deal for some, but it does look a little untidy. That was fixed for the new set as well. Same goes for the Patlabor blu rays too - the earlier sets had the wonky subtitles, but they were fixed for the complete collection.

I grabbed some items for Black Friday - or, at least, coinciding for some. Sentai Filmworks had some great sales going on - Tamako Love Story and Big O here were respectively about $5 and $25 each! I'm only halfway through Big O at this time, but I've enjoyed it enough so far to say that it was worth the purchase. The steelbook here comes with a thick art book, and has a plastic slipcover like the Mill Creek Tokusatsu Blu-rays (I hope this is a new trend catching on). UNLIKE the Mill Creek cases, however, this one has a hinged holder in between, so all four discs have their own spot.
Spoiler Below:

Fury Road was one I'd been meaning to get for a while (regret not seeing this in theaters), but the black & chrome edition specifically intrigued me over the regular release, so I just hadn't bit the bullet yet. It came down in price recently on Amazon, so I nabbed it along with Jaws.
Would you believe I've never seen Jaws in its entirety? :o I went ahead and got it, though, in anticipation of watching it with some friends. I figured it was a pretty safe blind box, and I might as well spend a little extra for a nicer edition! I'm not an intense collector, but these digibooks and steelbooks 'n stuff just look way better on the shelf than ordinary clamshells, you know?

I'm still waiting on one more from Best Buy; hopefully the delay doesn't lead to my order getting cancelled.

While my Best Buy order of Galaxy Quest was delayed, Amazon dropped their listing down to match price; so I cancelled the former and ordered the latter, alongside some more Mill Creek Ultra goodness. Sadly, Ultraseven's slipcover arrived a bit warped. I REALLY like that Orb's slipcover art is different from the case art, though. I wish more companies would do that.

Just Curious, did you see Screen Junkies documentary Never Surrender? I haven't yet but have heard good things about it.

I actually hate that. I despise slipcases, especially ones like my Geed and Orb ones where they came banged up to hell, but I can't get rid of them because the regular covers in the case don't have the title on the front now does the back have the series description and disc info. Normally I just throw out my slipcases unless I happen to have something worth selling off (like some idiot who bought my Dragonball Kai slips for $200).

I haven't, although I think I saw a trailer for it last time I was at the theater. It looked pretty interesting, so hopefully it becomes widely available to view.

I'm in the habit of keeping the slipcases - I guess just because I don't like throwing out what feels like part of the total product. They DO end up being redundant most of the time in art and info, though, so I don't really get what started the trend. If companies are going to bother with an extra cover, they should at least make something distinct between them, in my opinion.

I made a couple more blind buys while visiting Walmart. Early Man was sitting in the $5 bin, and I've been regretting not seeing it sooner anyway. Reigo, I've heard mixed things about; but it's been a long enough wait to actually see this film since SciFi Japan's main site covered it that I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt, even if it's just the DVD edition.

I picked up the 1976 King Kong on DVD for just $4.99 at Barnes and Noble. I seem to be growing very susceptible to blind buys at that price range...

Astroboy Ultra Collectors Editions 1&2. They went on sale again at Right Stuff, as they have for the past couple of years, but didn't want to miss out.

I am now the proud owner of all 3 Astro Boy series. The 1980s one is long OOP from Manga Ent. But I managed to score a good deal on eBay for under $30 from a Canadian seller ( the set goes anywhere from $60-$100).

And of course the early 2000s series has been released numerous times, they are practically giving them away (well $5) but you get the idea 8)

I am beginning to spot Arrow blu-rays at my local Barnes & Noble. I use to see them plentiful at Fry's but that chain seems to be in uncertain times. Kim Newman is featured in both of the Arrow videos ("The Man of a Thousand Faces" & "The Bloodthirsty Trilogy", and we can see a little toy Dimajin in the background during his "Thousand Faces" featurette).

Regarding the vampire films, I honestly thought that we would be getting the dubbed versions for both "Lake of Dracula" & "Evil of Dracula", but no dice (boo to Toho again). In truth, I was not crazy about those dubs, so the sting was a little less painful, but still, I thought that they would have been included. Seeing them in their original widescreen format, I've come to appreciate all three films more so and how beautifully and eerily they were photographed.

Check your disc again, my disc has the dubs, but they can't be selected from the menu. The last two films in the trilogy should have additional audio tracks if you use your player's Audio function on your remote. I guess the current theory about the dubs' weird situation on that disc is that Toho (as usual) waited to the last second to approve them, and Arrow wasn't able to update the menu in time for release.

The dubbed audio is also from the slightly edited U.S. television releases of both films and not the presumably uncut export versions Toho commissioned.

Egads, you are correct sir!!! Thank you for that verification! Somewhat underhanded, I say on Toho's part, if indeed they waited until the last minute to add those dubs. All what the Arrow package stated was "Original Japanese soundtracks with optional, newly translated English subtitles". No mention of any dubs and of course, not found on the disk menu.

After the recent flurry of posts regarding the upcoming arrival of GAPPA on hi-def, I got to wondering if they'll ever get around to giving GUILALA the same treatment. A few days later I did a search on Amazon for the heck of it and... sure enough it already exists.

Due to arrive in today's mail!

Japan is R1 but the disc is coded Region-Free, PLUS the English dub IS included! I'll spill details when I get a chance to go through it. Yeehaw!!!

^ Whoa!

I suppose it's the export dub included on the Eclipse set and not the AIP dub, right?
