I think the rights situation is similar to that of King Kong vs. Godzilla: the US rightsholder (in this case MGM) owns the film outright but likely doesn't have elements for the original version. MGM or Shout would have to get an HD transfer from the Danish owner.

I'd very much like to see someone release a decent restored & remastered Blu-ray or DVD of the Americanized version of Karel Zeman's amazing 1955 film "Cesta Do Pravěku," released here in 1960 as "Journey To The Beginning Of Time." The Karel Zeman Museum in Prague recently released a Blu-ray of it in it's native Czech w/ English subtitles, along with two of his other fantasy films, but I would prefer see the slightly-altered US version that I'm familiar with. Also, it's unsure if my US R1 Sony Blu player could be made to read the Czech disc. I gather there was no attempt at a restoration of the film for the Czech Blu-ray, but even so the picture & sound would seem to almost HAVE to be in better condition than the faded, scratched up print on the DVD-r I have, since it's a dupe of a Goodtimes EP-speed VHS. *SIGH* Someone get the rights to this and get it out there! (Are you reading this Shout! Factory or even, perhaps, Criterion???)

If you've never seen Journey To The Beginning Of Time, it's well worth looking for. It is AMAZING. I discovered it only a few years back but undoubtedly would have WORSHIPED it, had I first encountered it while still a young boy. Sure, the FX are crude in comparison to today's hyper-realistic CGI stuff, but it has such an impressive artistic quality to it that makes you just shake your head in wonder at the incredible variety of optical trickery used to bring the prehistoric creatures to life. Some are obvious while others left me scratching my head, even after several viewings, trying to figure out just how it was done. Bravo work all around. Besides, it's a wonderful boyhood adventure story on top of being a cool dinosaur pic.

A few extremely random title wants...


The Day The Earth Froze. I was delighted to read that this Swedish-Russian fantasy film was recently painstakingly restored. Now if only someone would legally obtain the restored version for it's optic enhancements, trim it to mimic the US release, then clean up a copy of the english-dubbed audio track and marry the two for a nice restored version of this fine little fairy tale. If you Google the film you can track down clips showing a spit screen side-by-side comparison of the restorative work done, and the results are pretty damn impressive. Very cool.

While I'm at it, The Magic Voyage of Sinbad needs some restorative love, too. Like Day the Earth Froze, it has some cool visuals.

Exterminators of the Year 3000. Yet another in a long string of quicky "Road Warrior" rip-offs that low-buck Italian film makers churned out by the dozens, but is charming in it's own mindless way, with some pretty nifty practical vehicle stunts to help spice up the goings on. This film was released a while back on DVD by Code Red, but reviews of that release say that the DVD looked like a dupe of an old, worn out VHS. As such, a new print struck from the imported/dubbed source materials would be really nice. (Are you listening, Shout!Factory???)

The American-ized cut of The Magic Serpent could use some sort of clean up and release on Blu-ray. It's a minor film but of some importance for it's direct influence on the original Star Wars, whether George Lucas will ever admit to it or not.

What Waits Below. I've always enjoyed this silly subterranean world flick. Nothing special I'll admit, but worth it for me due to the inclusion of 1970's original Captain Marvel, Jackson Bostwick, as the underground albino people's miltary leader, 'Hunter Prime.' The film has some simple old school adventures & thrills for the undiscriminating viewer. Available only in Region2 release and even that is sadly now out of print as well, and way overpriced because of this. Alas, my old VHS copy of this oddity cannot survive too many more viewings before it gives up the ghost. Someone out there HELP!

Lastly, for now...
All Of Me. For the love of Pete, WHY on Earth has one of Steve Martin's all-time BEST comedy performances been left to gather dust with no release??? This film has so many manic moments, side-splittingly funny physical comedy and totally quoteable lines... it's a tragic shame that this wonderful film has been ignored for so long. Do we have to wait until Martin dies before this finally sees the light of day? No! A THOUSAND TIMES... NO!!! A quality remastered Blu-ray is in order - and looong overdue!!! Please? Oh pretty, pretty please???

Are the guys from Shout!Factory crawling this thread?????????? I posted a 'want' of this rather obscure flick only a week ago and lo & behold while I am surfing Amazon on my lunchbreak I have a near apoplectic fit of shear rapture to discover that those wonderful folks ARE, in fact, releasing Exterminator of The Year 3000 on BLU-RAY! (Triple WOOT!) next year on March 3rd! Coincidence??????????? As you may have guessed, this makes me one happy camper, indeed! Gosh, if only all of our wants could be answered this quickly and happily!

A few more "wants" for Blu-ray...

The Legend of Boggy Creek. Ground-breaking in its day and still pretty spooky, if you're in the right frame of mind. Charles Pierce's 1972 cult classic has seen a plethora of crummy, washed out, craptastic publilc domain junk print releases. It's high time that the gang at Shout!Factory, (which recently released Pierce's "TheTown That Dreaded Sundown" & "The Evictors" on a nice Blu-ray double bill), tackle a full on restored remastering of this docudrama genre-defining classic.

While I'm in a 'Bigfoot' frame of mind, a nicely restored & remastered Blu-ray of Ed Ragozzino's 1977 Sasquatch: The Legend of Bigfoot would be a real treat, too. The story is pieced together bupkiss but there are a few thrills & chills to be had, especially during the fireside story sequences that recreate a couple of famous historical Bigfoot encounters. The Ape Canyon & Bauman Trapping scenes scared the crap out of me as a kid. Anyhow, this film was sort of the Holy Grail of 'Foot films for a long time, since it simply wasn't available on legit home release - anywhere. It was an almost forgotten title and all but impossible to find on home video until it came out as part of a Squatch-related 3-film package a few years back. http://www.amazon.com/Sasquatch-Horror- ... B000929AUA That set also includes the excellent made for TV film "Snowbeast" along with 1959's laughably bad "Snow Creature." Heck, the gorgeous travelogue-style footage of Oregon's breathtakingly beautiful Three Sisters mountain range alone would make Sasquatch: The Legend of Bigfoot a worthwhile Blu-ray purchase.

I personally would also love to see a lovingly restored Blu of Creature From Black Lake. It's a competantly done film with its fair share of scares & thrills, despite being an obvious low budget cash-in on the 70's Bigfoot craze. The inclusion of genre stalwarts Jack Elam and Dub Taylor add lots of flavor and a splash of quality acting to the affair. Having the soundtrack done by the same guy that scored The Legend of Boggy Creek, (Jaime Mendoza-Nava), makes it even more of a nostalgic tie-in to that sadly bygone era.

Finally, how about a Blu release (or at least DVD) of the complete Bigfoot & Wildboy series from Sid & Marty Krofft? Talk about wacked-out goofiness! Who knew that Bigfoot was a bonafied superhero?? Dumb but still silly fun.

Huh, I've never seen journey to the center of the earth but I missed out on their previous Harryhausen titles (still really bummed about Mysterious Island in particular) and I'm just not ready to drop $100+ for them...

I think I'll have to jump on these while I can. Even if I decide I don't like Journey, I'm quite certain I could sell it for a profit within a few months...

With releases like these, likely to sell out quickly, the onlly option is to buy (or better yet: preorder) from the Screen Archives site, which is the company behind Twilight Time. Releases that do not sell out make there way to TCM shop and are even sold through Amazon via SA.
