Dragon Ball Super Movie Trailer! In N Am Theaters - Jan

Postby The Shadow » Sat Jul 28, 2018 2:23 am

The trailer for the Dragon Ball Super movie dropped during SDCC -- here's the dub version (Funimation has a subbed version up but it looks choppy in the beginning). If I remember correctly, the movie will be out in Japan this December so it getting a North American showing in January is pretty nice (although it'll probably be a Fathom Events showing which my closest theater doesn't participate in)

I'll try to see it! Of course, I'm watching Super on Toonami, so I reckon I won't be technically caught up but that probably won't be a problem...

Man, it's amazing how Dragon Ball seems to occupy a bigger and bigger cultural space. It took a while to hit me that something popular when I was young was still popular.

I'm not 100% certain but I believe that this new movie will be like Battle of the Gods and Ressurection F in that those movies happen in line with the show. The prior movies were more like side stories, EG here's another adventure with Goku but it doesn't actually happen as far as the show's overall story line is concerned. So one could say that this is will be the canon version of Broly.

Toriyama has confirmed that he will consider this movie canon, unlike the previous Broly films.

What will be interesting will be whether this is a movie that they then continue on from whenever they re-start the weekly anime, or if it REALLY will be more like Battle of Gods and Resurrection F, where they essentially re-do this as a full 12-ish episode arc when they come back.

I really like that they tweaked the character designs for this movie. Really enjoying Super, but I think from a design standpoint there's a bit of blandness to it.

The way I see it, by letting the anime lead, even with Toriyama’s influence Super will be pretty much fleshed out by Toei, making it just a cut above your typical filler or GT. With these films Toriyama has more or leads taken the lead, so despite being animated outside of comics, BoTG, rF, and now Brolly have been & will be the best bit of Dragonball since DBZ’s end.

I thought Super was awesome. Calling it "just above filler" doesn't seem even remotely right.

I actually thought the Resurrection F arc on Super was better than the movie (preferred Battle of the Gods movie to the Super arc)

I’ll have a more in depth review later. But I saw Broly today and it was good. I walked out feeling 4/5. Couple things I didn’t like but overall it very much delivered and provided a WAY more interesting backstory to Broly than “he heard Goku cry once “

It's doing really well in the limited release theatrical run in the USA.
It's made a bit over 12 million USD.

It's rather fun to see a bunch of media outlets flabbergasted that this Dragon Ball thing that they have no knowledge of has such cultural cashé in the US.

^edit: awesome review btw. Agree for the most part (though I actually liked the chanting since the second time it brings in the films title theme Blizzard in a very DBZ sounding way)
Spoiler Below:
i blinked and missed how they broke the dimensional barrier but can’t wait to see it again. Also I wondered if Paragus leaving just before they got the new scouters is part of why Freeza and his men didn’t find him sooner. We know Freeza was spying on the new models, and Bardock knew it too. Though Freeza was content to let Vegeta and his band of misfits live, and presumably his brother Tarble too so he could toy with them (the lack of females meant he didn’t have to worry about an LSSJ via reproduction), if he knew Broly’s backstory he’d have surely wanted him dead. Starting 5 years early meant we got to see an interesting part in the timeline. I really liked seeing the intro to scouters, Colds transition, Ginyu Force etc. Though when you think of Vegetas age and realize Broly must be 40+ it’s kind of wild..we’ll besides him being an alien who ages differently from say Bulma

Finally I read a review that suggested because of his hairline perhaps Radditz is Vegeta III and Gine’s love child. While I thoroughly rejected the idea at first, when you consider Radditz is kind of a prick (unlike this version of Bardock (though Goku seemed to have a terrible temperament prior to the head bump)), when you ask why of all the royal pods we saw around him, Vegeta would allow only one kid on his team, and that kid has the potential to live up to a Saibaman, this theory starts to make a whole lot more sense to me. That would make for an interesting half brother connection.

The super manga is awesome IMO. Super anime is significantly worse save the second half of the Tournament of Power arc, and Ressurection F, which the manga skipped over (though there was a tie in manga). If all of DBS was like the second half of ToP animated or like the manga (which covered everything before Goku fought Freeza) I’d feel very different.

That being said, this movie is the ultimate in fanservice and my second favorite DB related film (3rd favorite if we count the specials). Had the stakes been higher like giving movie 8 this backstory, I’m thinking I’d rank it above BoTG and even the Broly special. I have it >Trunks sp. Im also convinced it follows the manga and not the anime for the following reasons.
Spoiler Below:
1. No Kaioken Blue. If Goku were desperate enough to fuse, he’d pull out all the stops redirect. We know he can’t do UI post ToP but Kaioken blue is an anime staple.

2. SSG Goku and Vegeta. This hasn’t been seen in the anime for Vegeta at all. In the anime Goku stops using it after BoTG (Ressurection F almost suggests he can’t). He only uses it against kale because after his first UI fight with Jiren he’s slowly regaining his power. However in the manga they use the form frequently against ZAMASU and Black and it serves a purpose.

3. A Gogeta that’s way stronger than Beerus. Granted this could be because Goku and Vegeta have gotten stronger. But they fuse at SSB, not UI, not Vegetas Evolved Blue (which also makes no appearance or if it did, looked quite different in the anime). They need their power levels to match for fusion dance, and while it’s debatable if Vegetto is stronger than Gogeta, all evidence points to Vegetto being the stronger fusion or them being even. Yet Vegetto in the anime went blow for blow with fused ZAMASU. Vegetto in the manga outclasses him worse than he did Buu. He’s throwojg around so much energy tossing the Universe 10 god around like a rag doll that Kaioshin exclaims loudly and reluctantly while running from the devestation...he may be stronger than Beerus. In the anime that didn’t seem to be the case. Yet a possibly weaker Gogeta nearly kills Broly here, and Goku thinks Broly might be stronger than Beerus. Not a chance if it’s following the anime.

4. Broly and Paragus exist on a faraway world and Freeza is shown destroying more and more worlds. The anime quotes the gods as acknowledging there to be only 28 planets left in Universe 7. This seems completely inconsistent with Freeza having planets numbering in the hundreds but let’s go with it. Between Earth, New Namek, Vampa whatever, and whatever planets Buu didn’t destroy, there’s supposedly 25 or so other planets for Freeza to terrorize? And that’s if he somehow had no planets of his own. It’s not believable. Maybe that’s part of why I have such a problem with the anime. Consistency issues. The manga is far more consistent, partially because there’s less cooks with Toriyama/Toyotaro.

5. It was written almost entirely by Toriyama. I’m not sure he watches the anime or reads the manga l, but he did name Toyotaro his official successor. Toyotaro has explained the discrepancies between anime and manga as being caused by them both working off the same script from Toriyama but filling in details. That means the original script for DBS must not include details like SSB Kaioken or it would be in the manga too. Details like there being 28 planets sound like filler too.

Of course the second half of the ToP is far more exciting in the anime so I prefer to think of both as separate canon, and even the film can fit with the anime when you realize Goku used Kaioken against Freeza the entire fight prior to SSJ and we know from the conversation between Kaioh and the Z fighters it just wasn’t being shown...so he may have been using it here, Goku used SSG in the anime ToP so it’s not a disqualifier, they’ve gotten much stronger so Gogeta may be much stronger than Vegetto was against ZAMASU simply because Goku and Vegeta went up a notch, the 28 planets bing sounds inconsistent for the anime too since Buu passed more planets on his way to heaven, and Goku passed more planets on his way to Namek, and Toriyamas the type of guy who’d want to please fans of both the anime & manga by making a movie for both

Anyway the film is a delight, and while the stakes don’t seem high (unless you’re roooting for Broly), the music is epic, the plot is as good as Dragonball gets, and the action is the best I’ve seen, including BoTG and Goku vs Jiren, & that says it all.

This film deserved the number 1 spot it had for a couple days and the fact that it’s still in the top 10 in the US box office. I don’t know how they follow this up but Toriyama did it with his 3 hour script they condensed into 2. I’m sure the sequel won’t disappoint, and if they bring back Cell or Cooler, ticket sales here won’t be far behind either. This is now the 3rd highest grossing anime film of all time on Box Office Mojo, and if it had a wider release I think it could have made it to #2.
