I like both and I don't like separating them as two different series since that was not Toriyama's intent. However, I prefer the story telling of DB whereas the Z portion has more memorable characters. Outside of Piccolo Daimaou and Tao Pai Pai, there aren't too many memorable villains, or rather, villains that really made an impact. Pilaf was funny, but he was pretty much forgotten, so he really didn't mean much to Toriyama. Same goes for Lunch,

I'm still going through my re-watch, but I feel like DB may end up being best. I love a lot of the characters in Z, but Z feels (from memory) so much more repetitive.

I'm actually through 75% of Dragon Ball Kai.

It's ok. The series is definitely much briskly paced than DBZ and it does remove some unnecessary filler. I took a break from watching it because I just sort of...got bored. Goku moves from really annoying to funny. Vegeta is always gonna Vegeta. I like the series for what it is, but it hasn't held up for me over time.

I REALLY love Kid Buu, but that's still airing in Japan right now so I haven't started that part of Kai.

On Topic - Battle is a decent movie. Beerus is funny, the fights are good, and I liked the mixture of action and humor. Also,

I'd assume people have seen the above spoiler part, but it's too good to ruin if you haven't watched it.

They royally f'ed up the Boo saga in Kai. They only cut it down by 23 episodes, cropped it into widescreen, and added a green tint to it. There is no reason that saga should be more than 40 episodes because it was only 99 chapters.

I like quite a few of Faulconer's cues, but overall, his music made the show seem kind of dour. Bad enough that uncut DBZ is horribly slow to begin with. I did like Kenji Yamamoto's score for Kai, even though he plagiarized. The remastered score from the original works well enough in the Cell Saga, though. (I suspect they went and changed the music for everything pre-Cell. I wouldn't know from experience.)
