Is there a word () that means "an opinion that is also a rant"? because if there was i would use it all the time. in fact i would use it to describe this post here...
So there is this cliche that is prevalent in a lot of anime, especially of the shonen subgenre () that is one of the reasons I don't watch nearly as much anime anymore. The cliche is that children protagonists are equal to or in most cases superior to the much more experienced adults around them. It is a typical power fantasy and is not at all unique to anime but the original Evangelion (which I will call Eva, ) not only avoided this cliche but handled it incredibly well in my opinion, despite having multiple children protagonists. The new Evangelion (which I will call Rebuild) misses this particular brilliance and unfortunately even lowers itself to embrace the cliche.
In Eva, the children were children. They had school problems, fitting in problems, unrequited crushes on adults, typical problems and friendships a 15 year old would deal with. They were pawns with no real concept of the larger picture. In this respect Eva was brilliant story telling, because it intelligently handled the characters in a realistic manner. This made it easier to be drawn into this fantastic world and to be invested in the characters and their emotions.
Rebuild skips over a lot of this character building, partially due to the compressed story, but i find this change, which accommodates "better" pacing for a movie, comes at a detriment to the characters, especially Asuka and Shinji. This wouldn't bother me that much () except Rebuild introduces the character of Mari. Mari is an operative which plays into the cliche of children being equal to or superior to the adults around them. In my opinion this waters the series down intellectually to something more the level of Gundam Wing.
I really want to like Rebuild, but by removing one of my favorite elements of Eva, it feels more like a cash in than a larger budgeted remake. Really the only thing i got from Rebuild was the desire to rewatch Eva, and that's ok with me because it is a series worth revisiting.
