August Ragone voiced his doubts about the article and then (a few hours later) relayed Tsuburaya's denial... a denial that seems to have a bit of wriggle room to it: "This (rumor) is not an official annoucement." ?

The thing that strikes me about the idea of an Anno Ultraman is how terrifying an opponent he could conjure up for Ultraman.

---edit--- huh, we posted at the same time!

From the little snooping I've done it seems this is a rumor that's been circulating in Japan for a little while now.

Gotta say, though: this is exactly the kind of ambitious, high-profile project which would garner international attention that Tsuburaya needs to be doing!

More news about this with an actual cast.

If you remember TsuPro's original comments, they were non-denial. Also, at this point, what's' being reported seems too detailed to be false.

Deeply mixed feelings.

Why if I may ask? I like the work Taguchi is doing, but the property is really stagnant creatively right now.

Very excited.

Interested about the division of labor here: Higuchi directs, Anno writes and produces (I assume a very hands-on producer) and the movie is a Tsuburaya/Toho/Khara co-production.

Man, I can only imagine how scary the monsters/aliens are going to be!

I would prefer Higuchi not direct.

They say it's a reboot of the original show!

So we should expect lots of close ups on faces, black screens with text, lots of political talk, daddy issues, and a female character that is there merely for fanservice.

Given how they changed Godzilla's ray usage, would it be inappropriate to speculate on which parts of the anatomy Ultraman's Specium Ray will be coming out of?

Kain, I'm not going to argue with your final point because while I don't wholly dislike Anno's female characters, I would definitely not call him a feminist filmmaker. HOWEVER.

Dr Kain wrote:So we should expect lots of close ups on faces, black screens with text...

Do you actually watch any classic Ultraman? Anno owes a LOT to the highly stylized approach Akio Jissoji took to tokusatsu, which is great as Jissoji's episodes are among the absolute best in the series. I sincerely hope they lean into that Jissoji influence.

So more God Warrior than Shin Godzilla, which I'm okay with.

lhb412 wrote:Man, I can only imagine how scary the monsters/aliens are going to be!

I'm not so sure about that. Godzilla is a monster that was always intended to be frightening but Ultra kaiju not so much, at least not in their appearance alone. Tohl Narita actually had a list of rules for designing his monsters that specifically avoided making anything too upsetting or grotesque, preferring instead to stick to abstraction and expressionism and I'd imagine a pair of nerds like these two are well aware of that.

So if this is a Studio Khara production, does that mean it will be animated instead of live-action?

Yes, I've watched the original, Seven, and Leo.

However, what does that have to do with the Anno tropes I mentioned?

This is a fair question. Maybe it has more to do with the fact that Anno is president of Khara and they are co-financing it...?

I mean, they have some people cast already. Would they specifically say they are voice actors or not?

I mean, I don't expect sone sneering, goopy, fangs-and-teeth '80s-style creature, but I think the more expressionistuc creatures of Ultraman and Ultraseven are really frightening.

Because at least visually, Anno owes a LOT to Jissoji. That's what I already said. Extreme close-ups on actors' faces, text on black screens, ambient sound over still scenes, extreme fisheye, etc. Anno LOVES Jissoji, and Jissoji is responsible for some of the absolute best bits of the Ultra Series.

Not big on Eva.
Not big on Shin G.
Not big on Ultra-stuff.
Not big on Anno.
Not big on Higuchi as a director.

PASS.

^Presumably nothing came of it, much like that Gamera concept trailer. I'm guessing Tsuburaya wasn't getting the traffic on that trailer like they wanted.

...So, my next question is: are we getting Shiro Sagisu back to score the film, too? I mean, I bet he'd do a great job scoring Ultraman; but between Evangelion, Shin Godzilla, and SSSS GRIDMAN, I feel like he kind of already has.
