You heard it here, folks!

The infamous agreement Chaiyo/UGM used to claim ownership of certain Ultra properties has been deemed "not authentic" in Los Angeles Federal Court!

Wow, I didn't even know there was a US case on going. I hope this case bodes well for Tsuburaya elsewhere too.

Hopefully this is the end of it. Sands isn't getting any younger and I'd hate to see this perpetuated for another generation.

I was trying to find it on the boards (either it wasnt on here or my search-fu is weak), but a couple of years ago when Sompote Sands was shopping the Hollywood deal, he also had a nice book that was up for preorder. Apparently the publisher pulled the plug after finding some of the photos had been digitally manipulated (eg bad photoshop to the point where the same source image of a younger Sands was in multiple photos) - There are two or three prints out there.

Wow. The more I hear about this, the more insane it is to me that a dispute has been going on so long. The guy photoshopped himself into production images? The idea that this is still a thing baffles me.

Does this mean we'll get good quality versions of the first few series?

Nope. Market is already saturated with low price Chaiyo products for the first three series, and Tsuburaya insists that Ultraman is for kids and needs a dub, which would be a lot more effort than Taro and Ace can probably justify. (My $0.02)

It means Tsuburaya would be free to put up those first six shows on Crunchyroll or another streaming site. It means that anyone who would want to license these series in the US would have access to Tsuburaya's superior materials. It means that Tsuburaya will be free to license and market their characters worldwide without having to walk on eggshells wondering if UGM would make a claim.

Will North American Blu-Ray sets of Ultraman be announced tomorrow? Almost certainly not, but it does mean we're in a better position for the future. That, essentially, the shackles are off of Tsuburaya Productions.

great, thanks for answering. I'd love to see Ultraman Jack and Ace.

If they got put on Crunchyroll that'd be really great. I'd like to re-watch the original episodes too in high quality if I could.

I don't care who releases it, just give me Ultra Seven on BD already with good, accurate, properly timed subs!

Will ULTRAMAN have a cameo in Ready Player One?

I think that ship has sailed - people seem to think The Iron Giant (who's prominently featured in the ads) replaces him.

So any of the "connected" sources have any new information on Tsuburaya's plans for the American market now that this mess over the rights is finally over?

I'd have to think Shout Factory would be in the running to secure rights for an American blu-ray release of Ultraman(basically using the Japanese blu rays with the added original English language dub and updated English subtitles)

As I understand it, Ultraman was NOT featured in the upcoming "Ready Player One" movie because the rights were in dispute so the "Iron Giant" was the replacement Can anyone confirm this or was Spielberg able to someone get Ultraman into the movie(he and the Science Patrol are referenced HEAVILY in the book).

Basically-where are we at? Will 2018 be the proper "return" of Ultraman to the United States? Or are we going to have to settle for streaming episodes off websites locked behind paywalls?

August Ragone had said on Kaijucat that Shout tried to license Ultraseven through Tsuburaya directly, and that Tsuburaya had told Shout to go via UM Corporation (I don't think it was UM directly, but a partner like Golden Media). Shout has worked with Tsuburaya with other licences, and their Super Sentai sets are apparently doing OK, so they would be a likely choice. And Amazon has been involved with Tsuburaya with original programming; Orb Origin Saga was announced (on Tsuburaya's news site) to have English and German subtitles under development but the show never surfaced outside Japan.

The only "inside source" of significance over the last year (that I can recall) is William Winckler, who had produced the English Language dubs of the Ginga S and X movies that had limited theatrical showings last Winter. During a few different podcast interviews Winckler stated that physical releases would be coming very soon; those obviously never materialized but Winckler has also dubbed another 3 Ultra movies (6 in total). It seems likely to me that these releases were held up by the lawsuit, but I don't know what to think anymore. Tsuburaya has been really great to it's fans outside Japan, they are clearly courting English fans but there is no communication on anything.

The only "confirmation" of the replacement was in a photo caption in a Variety article about the movie:

But putting aside Ultraman's own legal problems, he may not have even been considered. Iron Giant is more well known in the West, and more importantly is a Warner Bros property. Why pay a rights holder for a licence when you can use (and promote) your own for free? Early this year I was convinced that Tsuburaya was sitting on all this English-language material to tie-in with RPO, so it was disappointing to hear about the replacement... but also kind of a relief that Ultraman wouldn't be attached to the movie :p

So, the state of Ultraman 2017: Tsuburaya continues to spend money to dub and/or subtitle large chunks of their back catalog. When they will offer fans a chance to spend their money in return continues to be a mystery.

While Shout! is a viable option, they'll most likely have Funimation release the series through Crunchyroll since Funimation is handling their properties.

From what I've read, while a few outside properties have been licensed to sorta create the illusion of all-encompassing pop culture the emphasis is for this WB movie to emphasize WB owned or affiliated properties.

Oh, I forgot where I saw it but someone at Funi had hinted that live action Crunchy releases were a possibility. Don't remember if they said Ultraman specifically.

Yeah, Funimation will be distributing everything Crunchyroll decides to release on video. I believe Yuri on Ice is their first video release.

Chris Mirjahangir interviewed Paul Fruge of Funimation about Shin Godzilla last year, and Ultraman came up very briefly (and vaguely).

Mirjahangir: Since partnering with Crunchyroll might we see some current or past Ultraman shows be released on home video?

Fruge´: *wry smile*

I just really hope something actually comes out of that implication. I'd love to own HD, Tsuburaya-approved releases of some Ultraman series (with bonus features???), but I wonder if we're actually going to see anything at this point.
