HELLBOY... reboot?!?

Looks like it's a thing.

Apparently now we'll never see the third installment of DelToro's saga. Shame. :(

Yeah, this was announced a month ago (and shared in the Hellboy 3 thread).

I think it's a waste of an opportunity to turn the existing film duology into a completed trilogy. But hey, once this reboot underperforms and never gets a sequel, then Millennium Films will have another R-rated actioner in the $5 bin at Walmart. That's worth it, right?

David Harbour Teases ‘Hellboy’ Reboot As ‘Darker,’ ‘More of a Character Piece’
“Stranger Things” actor tells TheWrap R-rated movie is set to begin shooting in September
Beatrice Verhoeven wrote:David Harbour just wrapped filming the second season of Netflix’s “Stranger Things.” Now he’s preparing to start shooting “Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen,” which he teased as “darker” and “more of a character piece” to TheWrap.

“We’re supposed to go in September, I hope,” he said during a recent interview with TheWrap. “It’s good. It’s a whole new thing. I’d always been a fan of the comics and there’s a darker tone to it and I think in the climate we have now there’s kind of a darker… a desire for more of that… the script is good and this guy Neil Marshall is directing who’s really good and the aesthetic is great.”

In April, “Hellboy” creator Mike Mignola announced the R-rated reboot of the franchise with Marshall (“The Descent”) as the helmer of the project. Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden and Mignola are writing the script. The news came two months after Guillermo del Toro, who directed 2004’s “Hellboy” and 2008’s “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” with Ron Perlman playing the titular character, announced “Hellboy 3” would not happen.

In weeks prior, the filmmaker had teased fans with “Hellboy 3,” putting polls on Twitter about the threequel and writing that he met with Perlman, who is “in for the sit down.”

That didn’t pan out, unfortunately, as del Toro is not attached to the upcoming reboot in which Harbour will play the titular hero. Harbour credited his performance as Jim Hopper in “Stranger Things” as the reason he will play Hellboy.

“It’s a character that I love, and sort of in the way, I think Mike [Mignola] and a bunch of other people saw me in ‘Stranger Things’ and wanted me to play Hellboy and I think he has some parallels to him. I think he’s another complicated anti-hero who is not strictly good or bad, he’s just trying to do the right thing. I think he’s a demon, he’s crazy, and he’s also sweet and vulnerable and neurotic […] so there’s a lot of complexity there.”

All in all, Harbour just wants to make a “good movie.”

Why have they cast a white Englishman as a Japanese American character?

Seriously, this movie is cursed so that each bit of positive news is followed by horrible news.

"GDT and Ron Perlman are off the series in favor of a reboot"
"That's terrible!"

"David Harbour is Hellboy"
"Well, I like that guy... he may do good"

"Millenium films is producing"
"Oh, they traffic in crap"

"Ian McShane is Professor Broom"
"Oh, wow; he's terrific in everything!"

"Ben Daimio, the grizzled, middle-aged Japanese American character, is played by a pretty white boy"
"OH, SON OF A "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!"!!!"

And Ed Skrein does the classy thing and drops out of the role of Ben Daimio!

Good for him!

Still concerned that the type of people who could make such a stupid mistake in the first place are still in charge of this movie, though.

I sort of don't know what to make of his claim that he didn't know the character was half-Japanese... I mean, it's the right decision, for the sake of Asian-American actors as well as his own career. But just.. really? You didn't research this character at all?

He's ED SKREIN, not Ryan Gosling. "Forgettable villain in Deadpool," is the HIGHLIGHT of his career. His phone's probably not ringing off the hook with offers for him to research and choose and refuse at will.

Daniel Dae Kim is reportedly in talks to play Daimio. Now, he's Korean, not Japanese (close geographically!) ... but, he is pretty great and I think can really do the character justice.

First image of Harbour Hellboy:

Pretty good, still looks like Hellboy in much the same way the GDT/Perlman version did - the didn't try to reinvent the wheel, which is good. He's just a bit scragglier. They left out the skin carving pattern that GDT added, and the Right Hand of Doom looks smooth like ceramic or polished stone, while GDT went with giving it a rough, rocky surface texture.

Beginning to cycle back to anticipating this movie. I do love Hellboy, and while I am disappointed we don't get a trilogy capper for the previous two films I can't wish failure on a new Hellboy project.

But the pessimist inside me thinks about the whole 'good news, bad news' seesaw of the film so far and wonders what theoretical bad news could come around to counteract the positive response to Kim's casting and the reveal of Hellboy's new look!

Wells Cathedral in England allows Hellboy to film there once church officials look up 'Hellboy' and make sure he's a good guy:

BTW, the movie's apparently lost its subtitle and is just "Hellboy" now. I suppose we'll have to do "Hellboy '04" and "Hellboy '19" from now on.

I personally also hate the subtitling thing too, in its own way.

Like with Resident Evil the other day, Retribution was on, and I couldn't remember if that was 3, 4, or 5. There's also Afterlife, and Extinction...and Apocalypse? It's hard to remember which is which.

As opposed to Iron Man. Iron Man 2. Iron Man 3.

Gimme numbers. I'm lazy and stupid!
