Bumblebee: Live on the Sunset Strip

I'm still hesitant. I like the designs (kind of wish Bumblebee had a normal face/could speak) but the Last Knight hurt me physically as I sat in the theater.

Starscream (and I sincerely hope that's Starscream) looks great though.

Oh, hey; it's the Transformers. Crazy, I wonder why we haven't seen the Transformers in any of the five previous Transformers movies? Well, better late than never.

Great trailer, gives me a lot more hope.

They're focusing on a handful of human characters this time (Charlie, her friend, John Cena's character) instead of a cast of like forty which likely means they'll be far more developed than before.

We're also seeing a lot more robots, or at least a lot more new robot footage, than before. Each trailer has shown us a good amount of things we didn't see in the previous, which is a good sign.

Director change helps of course. Travis Knight made a fantastic, down-to-Earth yet still very fantastical film in Kubo and the Two Strings so I have a very good feeling about Bumblebee.

After Infinity War, this is my most anticipated movie this year. I hope it does relatively well at the box office.

Wait, we're actually getting a movie with G1 Transformers, and autobots who act like heroes instead of blood-thirsty psychopaths? I feel like some small part of my shrivelled, cynical heart just came back to life.

The trailer looks good. But nobody get their hopes up. I'm in it for what was revealed thus far, which appears to be a decent story in and of itself. All the Cybertron stuff is basically just trailer bait (albeit REALLY GOOD) trailer bait.

Anyone want to take a bet which has more run time in the actual film...

I don't know how much we'll see of the Cybertronian's but I'm loving the style shift for them. There's still some of the live-action style too the Cybertronians, but the shift to this partial G1 style is a major improvement in my opinion.

Another subtle design/approach change we see in both the trailers is when the young woman is on the creeper under Bumblebee and sees his eyes open. In G1 (both the show and Marvel comics) the Cybertronians were truly "robots in disguise" and we see multiple times in the stories that while the alt-mode looks & basically operates like a truck, plane, etc. that is just the outer form the Cybertronian is using (IE opening the hood on Bumblebee will not reveal the engine a VW bug is supposed to have but transformed Cybertronian). One of the things that kind of bugged me about the live action movies was the "robots in disguise" premise being effectively flipped -- the whole approach to the transformations was essentially vehicles that turned into robots. (Admittedly, the movie folks basically disregarded their own approach in the sequel movies).

While I liked the first Bayformers well enough (it was reasonably fun, but certainly had plenty of room for improvement), I’ve not liked any of the sequels at all.

But this. This looks like we might finally get the first REAL live-action Transformers movie that actually respects the source material rather than just using that material as the initial springboard. I’m genuinely optimistic about it.

Now, my real question is: Is this supposed to be a prequel that directly ties into the Bayformers series? Is it a “loose” prequel that could tie into Bayformers if they want or could go in its own new direction without regard to the previous films? Or is it a totally new thing that has nothing to do with Bayformers?

I’m hoping it’s the second or third option. I’d love to see a new series of films that is much better and has nothing to do with the previous transformers series.

The term Transformers fans are using is "Evergreen" meaning it gives some specifics, but it is left open enough to go both ways (that is , it could tie in to the previous films, or be a starter for a new series if it is successful enough).

There is also a tie-in IDW comic series currently issue #4 is due out this month that serves as a lead up and is set mostly in the 1960's. It had a kind of James Bond/spy theme to it

The only thing I want to know is if this movie is free of Michael Bay's typical immature toilet humor. I want to finally see a Transformers movie with at least a modicum of dignity and sincerity and not throwing inappropriate piss, fart, and sex jokes at me like some internet troll dishing out memes because he thinks he's funny. I want my fandom to be loved and respected by the director, not treated as a joke that appeals to the director's bad taste.

Really enjoyed it! Those first few minutes filled me with glee and the rest was such a pleasant, enjoyable experience, finally delivering on the long-promised "[girl] and [her] car" pitch from the first movie. The only negative I can think of is calling Blitzwing by that name, because he never shows off his namesake's gimmick and honestly could have been any old seeker instead of a known character. And the movie doesn't even mention his name besides the credits!

One name nitpick is pretty damn good compared to what the movie franchise has done previously!
