"MEG" - Feature Film Finally Happening?!?!

Saw it myself as well. Was more serious than I expected, but still a lot of fun. Personaly, I would rate this my second favorite shark movie...right after Jaws and before Deep Blue Sea.

That's not saying much considering Jaws is the king of the mountain while Deep Blue Sea is towards the bottom of the barrel.

Anyway, I went in with low expectations and ended up having a good time. This movie was far superior to Pacific Rim 2, Jurassic World 2, and Rampage combined. It was nothing original, it was cleary pandering to the Chinese box office, Jason Stathem continued to play the same Mary Sue character he plays in every movie, but it knew what it wanted to be and it did it splendidly. It was fun, had some funny dialog, but god damn did it follow every cliche imaginable. Still, it was a good time, the little girl was hands down the best character, and this was probably the best way to end the summer blockbuster season. Do I need to ever see it again? God no. Once was enough. Though, I expect there will be a sequel given how much money it made over the weekend.

No love for The Shallows?

That's my number 2 shark movie.

Shallows falls apart for me at the end because the first two-thirds is taut, then the final act is a series of lucky coincidences.

This was decent fun. The characters are likeable and the action keeps getting better all the way to the end. The movie is at least 15 minutes too long and there are way too many moments of people being sad and broody. It's just too serious for a movie this silly. It would have benefited from cutting out a lot of the melodrama and going for a livelier tone closer to Jon Turteltaub's National Treasure.

I saw Meg this past weekend and loved it. It supplanted Deep Blue Sea as my second favorite shark film with Jaws being the obvious number 1

After seeing the trailer, I had extremely low expectations. Thought I would give it a chance this weekend and lo and behold, I actually found myself enjoying this! I thought it was better fare than say "Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom" as it was much more straight forward.

Surprised that there was not more carnage than what we eventually saw, but I am not the biggest fan of gore, so I did not mind. Yes, the characters were not the most fleshed out, but for this type of narrative, it really did not matter. And, finally the shark itself, I thought menacing!

This was really three movies in one setting - The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, The Creature from the Black Lagoon and Jaws.

I saw it a second time and it was still very entertaining. I enjoyed PR2, Rampage and parts of Fallen Kingdom, however this was better than all those movies combined. It was a movie that wasn't afraid to be fun. I can see myself buying this on blu ray and making this be one of my go to movies I throw on when I need some background noise or have friends over. It is very dumb in some parts, however the portrayal of the Megalodon is top notch and Jason Statham chews scenery like a boss.

...what a complete piece of crap.
The absolute worst thing a bad movie can be is boring. For a solid 50 minutes in The Meg, I feel like I'd literally describe the "plot" as "There's a secret extra layer underneath what we think is the bottom of the Marianas Trench and people go there to see what's up."

That's it. That's all that "happens" for 50 minutes.
Then there's a few minutes of "discovering" what's there...and it's like, 20 additional feet of depth, and then there's a super duper sneaky shark and the movie just....kinda does nothing.
There are a lot of things it COULD do: It could build up the dread of the reveal that there are 2 sharks more (don't worry, that's not a spoiler at all; the instant they even bring it to light as a possibility the second one shows up, thus destroying any intrigue or drama). It could build up the motivations of the characters (ie, make someone into a villain...or like...a character with any distinguishing personality traits). It could have a lot of mayhem and kill sequences. It could do a lot with the tracking beacon they place on the shark. It could do a lot with the shark taking the beacon off, which it does by like, lightly brushing against a dock. It could build the romance or even a possible love triangle. It could feature sharks fighting the Navy.

It does NONE of those things...or it kinda sorta does them REALLY half-assedly.
One star for an ending that almost literally amounts to Jason Statham punching a shark in the face.

I was almost convinced by word of mouth of how "fun" this is to see it in theaters. I'm SO glad I didn't.

A little bit of trivia I noticed...something this film has in common with "Jaws" besides just being a shark movie. In both films, the dogs(Black Lab in "Jaws", Yorkshire Terrier in this)are named Pippin. Just thought I'd mention it in case no one else noticed...
