I Watched this last night on CBS.com. I can tell my tastes are changing as I get older, tending to soften up a bit. If I were in my early 20's I would have hated this show, and probably never even tried to watch it. But now, married with kids, I enjoyed it. Of course since my wife and I decided to name our daughter Kara 3 months before she was born (nearly 11 years ago), we always felt a special significance any time Supergirl appeared in any media. I even liked how they specified the pronunciation (Car-uh as opposed to Care-uh), something my daughter goes through in real life on a regular basis.
Not to mention that having a blond-haired blue eyed baby girl come from two dark-haired dark eyed parents, made the name even more special (sure in truth its just a recessive gene from both our grandparents, but it was still neat to have our child "really" look like her namesake). Needless to say, my daughter has been asking me on a regular basis when the show was coming out since we first saw the previews months ago. Well last night did not disappoint. She really enjoyed it, as did the rest of our family. I'd give it a solid 8/10. Of course we knew there would be liberty taken with some DC characters (Arrow & Flash do the same thing), but you can only take it so far. My perception of Henshaw specifically comes from the Death/Return of Superman, and the stuff that followed in the mid-late 90's after where he was basically a cross between Superman & the Terminator. I don't know if his look has dramatically changed in recent years, but the character of Hank Henshaw in this series was not even in the ballpark from what I remember. Cat Grant I believe was just a TV reporter from what I recall, but oh well. But Supergirl herself was amazing. Melissa Benoist was great. A perfect quirky "girl next door" type, someone you would definitely want as a friend. As Supergirl, she was definitely beautiful, but not in an overly sexual way, which I appreciated. Even in the scenes where she was developing her costume, she refused the super-tight revealing one. Good role model for young girls indeed. Some of the language could probably have been skipped, but hey, its a lot better than most other shows on TV in that regard. (Remember I am watching this with my daughter). So we will continue to watch this show together, and see where it goes, hopefully it does not disappoint.
Lastly , in regards to referencing Superman, they did call him specifically that, though I think it was only once or twice, yeah the "hims" can get a little annoying. But I think they don't really have a problem with the name so much as his face, as you'll never get a direct close-up, unless of course Henry Cavill ever does a guest appearance, then of course, that opens up a whole other can -of-worms since the TV and Movie versions of DC are not supposed to be the same.
There are no more good TV Shows, only ones that haven't disappointed me yet.
