Not rage as much as hesitation. It's been a LONG time since he's made a good movie.

So we'll be getting a fun pop-culture reference filled Spielberg movie, maybe not the best adaptation of the book.

I think it could have been worse, but I just don't think he's going to do the best job with this. It doesn't really feel like it's in his wheelhouse.

That was so boring I had to check to see if I still had a PULSE after seeing it.

So, I just finished reading this book.

Wonderful concept, POOR execution. I actually would have quit reading it on two separate occasions were it not a book club selection.

I'll see the movie if it retains...

Spoiler Below:
... the Tokusatsu/anime explosion at the end. Mechagodzilla vs. Ultraman? Yes, thank you.

Hell, they should just make it Godzilla vs. Ultraman for the film, because where else would you ever see that?

Video Game Movies Can Be Good (They Just Shouldn’t Be Adaptations)
There's a better way of doing this.
ANDREW TODD wrote:Inception goes a step further, giving up the technological pretense and dropping its characters into dreams. As much as the film world has labelled Inception as About Filmmaking (and no joke, that’s 100% what it is), it could equally be described as a film about games. It has level designers, weapon selection, mechanical exploits, and even its own equivalent of a "falling through the floor" glitch. More intriguingly, its time-dilation conceit mirrors the way games can blot out the real world. Virtual reality developers have noted a time-dilation effect when playing games in VR headsets; Inception trapping Leo DiCaprio in a collapsing city is just a more extreme version of that.

Taking a more metanarrative approach, Edge of Tomorrow and Source Code emulate a player’s journey as opposed to a character’s. They deal with time-travel conceits that mimic the death-respawn cycle of video games, with the player learning new information and/or improving their skills each time. Source Code, notable for coming from Warcraft director Duncan Jones, uses its time-loop structure for mystery, but Edge of Tomorrow really makes it sing as action sci-fi. Edge of Tomorrow puts character progression and pattern recognition at the heart of its protagonist’s arc, with Tom Cruise not only getting better at fighting aliens, but improving as a human being as well. That’s the kind of tight interlock between narrative, game mechanics, and character that the video game world could use more of.

One interesting, final example is yet to emerge. Ready Player One is set to do nearly everything mentioned in this article, taking place as it does in a future where a virtual reality gaming system is the second life Second Life never became. Given that its source material is more concerned with referencing ‘80s culture than synthesising it (the book cribs so heavily it’s virtually succumbed to SIDS), it surely can’t be as good as the films listed above. But Steven Spielberg is at the helm, and if anyone can turn a fawning fanbook into a good movie, it’s Spielberg.

Wha?
I've only been negative (as a general rule) about Resurgence.
And this, I guess.
I gave TMNT Out of the Shadows a good review.

I read Ready Player One. Good concept, ATROCIOUS execution.
Who would have thought a story all about a time of pop culture I love with references to kaiju, old video games, and classic/cult movies often even set in the fictional universe of those things due to a highly advanced VR system could be so BORING?
The writing is incredibly flat, and FAR too often he slips into a passive tone that sucks the life out of the words (and my soul). The references wind up becoming intrusive and grating, going to a point that feels like fan fiction (The DeLorean complete with flux capacitor but voiced by Kit from Night Rider and with Ghostbusters logo stickers and an ECTO ONE license plate? Ugh). It's not INSPIRED by these things, it just wants to name drop them all over the place so the author and reader can share a self-congratulatory smile when they know what the reference is. It was cool for the first quarter of the book or so, but it became tiresome. None of it mattered, and it only served to try to mask that the author can't flesh out characters or engage in a decent mystery/scavenger hunt story.
He drops exposition and just infodumps in extraordinarily BORING ways, spending something like 30 pages just dully recounting the origin of the OASIS VR. I couldn't believe that was serious, and he couldn't think of a better way to integrate that into the story.

It's a good idea, and the skeleton of something good is there, but the execution is for crap, and a streamlined movie version could/should be capable of making it engaging and interesting.

I felt like it utilized the concept fairly well. I was entertained cover to cover, and while I had some issues I felt the story it told was incredibly fun. Now, the second book he wrote, Armada almost synchs up with your complaints on this. Armada's references never quite jive for me because RPO has a setting that allows all of those things to happen without much explanation. I think it also reminds me of my youth spent on the interwebs, albeit full of scifi tech.

I've heard very bad things about Armada. I won't be reading it. Everything that bugged me about Ready Player One but taken up to 1000? No thanks.

Yeah, if you didn't like this, don't go near Armada. It wasn't even the references, the whole story was unengaging. I mean, at least you acknowledge the concept behind RPO being intriguing.

Armada has been done a billion times, and didn't need this addition.

I just went and read through the plot summary on Wikipedia. It sounds pretty awful, and reading through reviews on Goodreads makes it sound even worse.
