In sounding rather sacrilegious, I actually liked this design of Mechagozilla, and for the first time since the 1970s, he looked menacing!

Overall, I enjoyed this movie. A little too long for its own good perhaps, but the positives outweighed any negatives.

Fan reached out to the Mechagodzilla concept designer and we get a bit of elucidation on Mechagodzilla's design in the movie. Apparently Toho did want something that resembled the legendary '93 poster design!

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Spielberg keeps things zipping along, and despite the most frequent criticism that RPO is all about hollow references I actually felt that was mostly just window dressing for a simple, straightforward story about young heroes on a treasure hunt trying to outwit bad guys also after the treasure. My enjoyment wasn't hampered by not knowing about an Atari game, for instance.

Was happy with just how much time the monsters and robots got in comparison with everything else. King Kong, The Iron Giant, the Gundam RX-78-2, and Mechagodzilla all got nice roles, and even though the Cyclops from 7th Voyage didn't get a main role it was so obvious looking a thing you'd often pick it out in crowd scenes.

Oh, almost forgot the best reference: the bad guys meet up under a crashed Martian craft from George Pal's War of the Worlds. The sound effects those things make are so cool!

I haven't seen Ready Player One yet but this sure is a cool take on Mechagodzilla. I like how it resembles the version from Noriyoshi Ohrai's 1993 poster art.

Boy oh boy was this awful.

If I wanted to just remember that stuff I like exists, I'd sit back and look at my dvd/Blu-ray collection. If I wanted to...well...there's nothing TO the rest of this movie. The egg hunt is even less believable in terms of nobody ever figuring it out than it was in the book, the characters are given even less personality and there's almost no understanding of their relationships, and holy Hannah are there some mind-bogglingly awful logic gaps (poor teen with no money has the ability to have facial recognition to log into his internet but powerful billionaire needs password "B055Man" written on the arm of his chair, for easy hacking.

Complete and utter trash. A worthless suck of time.

The Mechagodzilla in the book bugged the hell out of me. The guy who made the Oasis was a freak for the 80's, but added the Kiryu MG over the Showa? No way.

I don't really remember that well. I read the book a few years ago, and only once at that. It got tons of points for nostalgia (which was 100% of the point), but story-wise, the book was incredibly amateurish. Simplistic, by-the-numbers dreck. The MG stuff stuck in my mind, but very little else. The movie was essentially the same thing. Cool to see some of my old favorite pop culture memories, but overall bland and easily forgotten.

I had fun with this, but understand the criticisms. It’s way too lightweight to rank with Spielberg’s best, and has none of the analog beauty of his 80s films. It was enjoyable, but very slight, and wasted almost all of its potential for satire or social commentary in favor of empty nostalgia.

I finally saw this. It's a lot of fun, just a lighthearted adventure flick with a ton of visual effects and easter eggs. The story is really predictable and filled with cliches but the direction, pacing and action sequences are top-notch Spielberg quality. It was worth checking out.
