(love the theory that Tsuburaya is planning to release the dubbed Ultraman movies to coincide with the release of Ready Player One. Not that I believe it, but I love the theory!)

I also read an interesting article that lumps this movie in with The Lego Movie and the Wreck It Ralph sequel in that they are films that mainly serve to advertise all the brands under the umbrella of their respective studios. Sure, they license a few outlying properties to give the impression they're covering all of pop culture, but the main focus is on their own brands.

It may be because I watched it on my phone and the image was small, but I only saw. I think 3 pop-culture references I recognized, also I thought this was supposed to be 80's centric? The Iron Giant came out in 1999???

Well, that trailer certainly looked... expensive. It's a teaser though, so it's basically just a bunch of shots of pop culture stuff whizzing around and mashing together. I really hope there's more to it than that in the finished movie. Spielberg has shown on many occasions that he understands all the facets of what makes an action scene tick, but this teaser just looks like everything that goes wrong in action movies. There's a reason why a bunch of kids being chased on peddle-bikes in ET is more thrilling than any number of Fast and Furious kaboom-fests. From my own writing, and watching far too many movies, I've come to understand that the viewer needs to know the answer to four questions (preferably before an action scene starts) if it's going to have real impact: What's happening? Why is it happening? What's at stake? Why should I care? Expensive CG has, in some cases, become a way to use a flashy fireworks display to distract the viewer from the fact that some of these questions haven't been answered. I hope that this is just a case of a teaser being a teaser, and Spielberg hasn't forgotten his own lessons.

I'm just curious if someone would be kind enough to explain or show us a link to some tangible concrete proof confirming that WB actually has obtained the legal rights to MechaGodzilla. It would be a sweet moment to see MG battling Iron Giant. (Yes, Ultraman would have been cooler. Admittedly though, Ultraman would've been almost too much for me to see on the big screen ...without some depends securely in place. )

I ask only because IF the folks at WB actually do have rights to MG then that would be the first I've heard of ANY of Toho's stable making the journey over here, besides G, Mothra, Rodan and KG. It would give me pause as to just what other characters WB may have secured the rights to... or are attempting to that they've thus far kept mum about. MG peaks my interest because: 1) he's a great character, 2) he's one of G's big bads... and 3) he's one of the logical choices for WB to pursue IF they intend to crossover the PacRim universe with their Monsterverse. Hmmm...
