Not rage as much as hesitation. It's been a LONG time since he's made a good movie.

I think it could have been worse, but I just don't think he's going to do the best job with this. It doesn't really feel like it's in his wheelhouse.

So, I just finished reading this book.
Wonderful concept, POOR execution. I actually would have quit reading it on two separate occasions were it not a book club selection.

I honestly think Spielberg is gonna screw this one up. He just feels wrong for this material.

Given that the material sucks, I'm okay with that.

I felt like it utilized the concept fairly well. I was entertained cover to cover, and while I had some issues I felt the story it told was incredibly fun. Now, the second book he wrote, Armada almost synchs up with your complaints on this. Armada's references never quite jive for me because RPO has a setting that allows all of those things to happen without much explanation. I think it also reminds me of my youth spent on the interwebs, albeit full of scifi tech.

I've heard very bad things about Armada. I won't be reading it. Everything that bugged me about Ready Player One but taken up to 1000? No thanks.

I just went and read through the plot summary on Wikipedia. It sounds pretty awful, and reading through reviews on Goodreads makes it sound even worse.

I thought I remember Spielberg saying something like he was planning on removing a lot of the pop culture references.
