I'm not sure what to think about the possibility of Sony doing a Mario Bros. movie (animated or otherwise). A Mario Bros. movie could work out great if Genndy Tartakovsky (or someone similarly talented) oversaw it, but on the other hand this is the same studio that gave the reins of the Green Hornet movie to Seth Rogen.

It would be interesting to see what Peter Jackson might do -- a bit of Middle Earth vibe to the Mushroom Kingdom would certainly turn heads.

Sam Raimi could be a better choice.

Well, it's not as if the games don't already have a built in device for a PJ style multi-part movie...

So.... could that mean if they made a tie in game it could be on the PS4 and VIta as well as WiiU and 3DS? That'd screw up so many parents getting games for their kids.

Mario set for the big screen as Nintendo eyes filmmaking
KOJI NISHIMURA wrote:KYOTO--Nintendo Co.’s beloved characters such as Mario are expected to make the leap off the console screen to the big screen within a few years, according to the president of the video game giant.

President Tatsumi Kimishima said that the company is negotiating with a number of movie production companies around the world in search of a partner for full-fledged filmmaking.

“We want to do as much as we can by ourselves,” Kimishima told The Asahi Shimbun.

Nintendo hopes to bolster the franchise of its characters by producing movies featuring them, helping to expand the audience for its main business of video games.

The world-renowned video game manufacturer has previously been involved in the movie business, but only to a limited extent. Past Nintendo-related movies were the results of the company licensing featured characters to filmmakers in exchange for royalty payments.

The company now aims to make filmmaking a standalone business.

Nintendo’s movies will target not only the domestic market, but audiences in the United States and other parts of the globe as well. The company aims to release the first movie in two to three years’ time.

Nintendo has not divulged any details of its first film project, but it will likely be a 3-D animated movie featuring such popular video game protagonists as Mario from the Super Mario franchise and Link from the Legend of Zelda series.

Although the development of consoles and video game titles is the company’s bread and butter, sales have been stagnant, with attempts to increase sales challenged by Japan’s dropping birthrates.

When Nintendo closed its books in March, it had made 504.4 billion yen ($4.6 billion) in annual sales, down 8.2 percent from the previous year, marking a decline for seven years in a row.

THR NOVEMBER 14, 2017:
Universal, Illumination Near Deal for 'Super Mario Bros.' Animated Feature
Mia Galuppo wrote:Universal's Illumination Entertainment is nearing a deal with Nintendo to make an animated feature based on the popular Super Mario Bros. video game, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

First debuting in 1985, the video game followed a mustachioed plumber, Mario, and his lanky brother, Luigi, in their quest to save Princess Peach from villain Bowser.

Illumination, which is behind the Despicable Me franchise and subsequent spinoffs, declined to comment.

The video game was adapted into a live-action feature in 1993 that starred Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. Super Mario Bros., released by Disney, was panned by critics and bombed at the box office upon its release, but has since gained a cult following. The film's failure has contributed to why Nintendo has not allowed Hollywood to bring its properties back to the big screen since.

Illumination last released the feature Sing, which grossed $634 million globally, and is currently in production on Minions 2. (The first Minions feature grossed $1 billion at the global box office.)

Along with Super Mario Bros., Nintendo properties include the Zelda, Donkey Kong and Kirby games, as well as the massively popular Pokemon franchise. Last year, it was announced that Legendary Entertainment had closed a deal with The Pokemon Company, which handles all the franchise rights from the Nintendo game, for a live-action film franchise based on Detective Pikachu.

There have been 20 animated films based on the Pokemon stories and characters, but outside of these Nintendo has proved wary of Hollywood handling adaptations of its games.

Alright Universal --don't screw this up, Nintendo already has the perfect music for closing credits. Lead song of the closing credits! And it has to be this version as performed by the great Captain Lou Albano.
