I'd really like to have been a fly on the wall when the Sony executives had their meeting and someone said "Do we really need to hold onto the Spider-Man movie merchandising rights? We should trade those away so we can keep all the movie money and not have to pay Marvel their share of the movie money."
Merchandising has always been a prime money flow; Disney had great success with Davy Crockett and Zorro merchandise sales and of course George Lucas's massive success years later with Star Wars merchandise sales.
EDIT: Also, we know the rumor suggest Michael Keaton as playing The Vulture in S:Homecoming; and that does strike me as the most likely scenario. But I'm still kind of wondering if the movie won't be the first Morlun story. I'm partly wondering this because I re-read the relevant TPB recently which is titles Spider-Man: Coming Home -- and if this is the case then perhaps Keaton is not playing the villain but rather the Ezekiel Sims the older spider-powered wealthy man who attempts to hid Peter from Morlun.
Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?
