Captain Marvel freaking rocked!

Right out of the gate, Brie Larson cements Carol Danvers as one of the most engaging heroes in the MCU. Even when she can't remember her past, she's quick-witted and resolute, determined to do what's right and unafraid of charging into action. It's cool to learn her backstory as she discovers it for herself. I really dug the trippy flashback sequence near the beginning when her brain gets forcibly scanned, a clever way to cover exposition and build intrigue while opening up the story.

I was expecting the movie to be more formulaic but it actually stands out pretty significantly from more traditional superhero origin stories like Doctor Strange, Deadpool or Captain America: The First Avenger. The closest comparison would be Thor, another fish-out-of-water tale which also divided its runtime pretty evenly between Earth and space, although Thor wasn't an origin story. Not that there's anything inherently wrong with origin story tropes but Captain Marvel has a unique structure in both how it plays out and how it explores the character's origin. Also...
It's cool to see Nick Fury developed as a younger character getting his first taste of superpowered galactic weirdness. The buddy-cop interplay between he and Carol gives the movie a bouncy energy that complements the fast pacing. The dynamic between Larson and Jackson here is a fun change of pace from how their characters interacted in Kong: Skull Island. I was actually impressed with the CGI de-aging technique that they used for Fury and Agent Coulson. I'm sure I'll be able to pick it out more the next time I see the movie but I didn't notice any particularly bad shots on my first viewing.

The Stan Lee tribute at the beginning was perfect. They recreated the animated Marvel Studios logo but all of the character clips are replaced with clips of Stan Lee's cameos from previous MCU films. Then they topped it with one of his most meaningful cameos ever in the movie proper, which I won't spoil here. It made me smile.

I don't think Captain Marvel is a top-tier MCU entry but it is really damn good. I'd put it in the same boat as Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Captain America: Civil War, and Ant-Man and The Wasp.

Captain Marvel debuted to $153.4 million in North American admissions over the weekend. Coupled with an international haul of $303m including an $86m launch in China, Captain Marvel opened to a massive $456.7m worldwide.

That makes it the MCU's 2nd-biggest global debut and the 6th-biggest for any movie to date, behind only Avengers: Infinity War, The Fate of the Furious, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part Two.

Domestically, in both and , the only MCU entries to open bigger than Captain Marvel have been the three Avengers films, Black Panther, Iron Man 3, and Captain America: Civil War.

With an estimated 16.99 million tickets sold in North America through Sunday, Captain Marvel had the 13th-most-attended domestic opening for any and the 28th-most-attended opening weekend for to date in North America. Captain Marvel's $153.4m debut is currently the 18th-biggest in unadjusted dollars, right between Rogue One and The Hunger Games.

In , Captain Marvel's $86.3m debut is the 27th-biggest opening weekend for any movie to date and the 6th-biggest for any Marvel/DC-based film after Infinity War, Age of Ultron, Venom, Civil War, and Aquaman. It's the 14th-biggest debut for any Hollywood import in China.

Thumbs up! I thought Brie was quite good, as well as the young rendition of Nick Fury. However, it was Ben Mendelsohn and Goose that were the scene stealers! As for the 90s references, Blockbuster (with VHS's) was a hoot, as well as a search engineer (which I will not name), that I totally forgot about in this day and age of Google.

Screw all of the controversies associated with this movie and Brie Larson, which I thought were blown way out of proportion.

Using Leonard Maltin's rating score, I give "Captain Marvel" a solid *** stars.

Below is a weekly show I enjoy watching. Dan Murrell is someone I've come to respect. While I'm not a fan of critics, in this particular show is he all about stats and NOT film critique. I do watch other shows he's involved in, and sometimes I agree with him, and sometimes I don't. While I feel this particular episode is so important however is because it gets to the heart of exactly HOW I feel. Now, I still haven't seen Captain Marvel yet, and if/when I decide to, it will be based on my own research, and not somebody's opinion good or bad. I really like this interview because he uses logic and stats to make his points. Even at this however, he points out that his own stats can be flawed, or spun to support one side or the other, and TELLS people flat out not to just go by his words. The point being that there are Trolls BOTH as detractors, AND supporters of this film. Anyone who questions my intelligence for not seeing the *obvious*, (i.e. their point of view) and coming to a quick decision is not someone I can respect. I have come to understand that relying on my own snap judgement often brings me to incorrect conclusions, and doing as much research as possible is always good. Now if we all come to the same decision, and it just took me a little longer, because I'm a researcher and digger for facts, I don't see the harm. Dan's feelings below express pretty much my sentiment 100%. I'm only posting this, because hopefully if anyone takes the time to watch it, they can finally appreciate where I am coming from.

Aside from the people who've mentioned it here in this thread, I am completely oblivious to whatever controversy there is over this film. And I'm glad of that ignorance.

Got to see the film last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Easily in the top half of marvel movies to date, probably in the top 25%. My wife agreed it was one of the better entries too. And yes, Goose, Mendelson, and young Nick Fury were highlights. Also really enjoyed some of the, "oh, so that's how that happened" moments. Those are so easy to screw up (I'm looking at you "how Han got the last name Solo") but in this film I thought each one was perfect.

It's somewhat impossible to not see this film as Marvel's answer to Wonder Woman's success. Personally I still prefer Wonder Woman (both the film and the character) but I think Marvel did a great job "answering the call" so to speak by doing their own unique thing rather than aping DC's success. I could also see the argument for this actually being a better film than Wonder Woman, though I think both are pretty awesome and personally prefer WW. But the bottom line is it's great having so many awesome super hero movies available. And it's awesome that we're finally at the point where comic book movies can go full on comic book without reservation and succeed with general audiences.

Looking forward to seeing Captain Marvel in Endgame!

Saw this last night.
Enjoyed it overall. The first act is a mess, and in general the plotting is pretty weak. Lots of characters just go from place to place and do things because it's what the plot needs to happen to keep advancing the story. This is especially true in the first act when the relationships haven't been developed enough for us to buy that certain characters would just trust each other. As the movie goes along this gets better, even if the plot becomes a bit more conventional.

The movie is carried by the performances though. Sam Jackson is awesome as always and sorry haters, I liked Brie a lot. She's charismatic and charming and though she can leave a little to be desired as a badass, she nails the comedic bits and I was won over on Captain Marvel as a character by the end and I really look forward to seeing more of her, and seeing how she plays off a truly good villain, which this movie lacks.

Yeah, another Marvel movie with a villain problem, but it's less problematic here than in something like Thor 2, for example, because it's less of a story about a hero vs a villain or even any villainous scheming at all...the overarching themes and story have a broader scope than "a villain wants to blow up some stuff."

Ben Mendelsohn as Talos absolutely steals the show. Amazing performance. Amazing character. Definitely would love to see him again.

End of the day, it's a Marvel origin movie. A little better than some (Cap 1, Dr Strange, Thor 1) a little worse than others (Iron Man, GOTG, Spider-Man).

It would probably fall somewhere right around the middle of the pack of Marvel movies for me, and that's totally fine. It at least restored some of my hype for Endgame after Ant-Man and the Wasp sucked all the air out of the room and left behind a thick cloud of fart.

Saw it opening weekend and liked it. For being the origin movie of the MCU's most powerful superhero, it's a rather small film, but it makes sense in hindsight. She can't have made a huge public impact on Earth without decimating the continuity of the MCU, so it kind of feels like a slightly bigger version of the first Thor movie.

As for the detractors, most of what I heard was abut how Brie Larson is just a woodenplank. Her character wasn't the most expressive, but I think that lies with her Kree training and whatnot. Her humanity still breaks out of the stiff, stoic "warrior hero" facade and I do wish there was more done with that or she was more non-stoic than she was by the end. On the opposite side, I've also seen this movie claimed to be a "game changer". This movie is not a game changer. Yes, it is a female focused superhero with some feminist themes (which I'd go into slight more detail but spoilers and all), but it wasn't an impactful film. If this movie had a "No Man's Land" moment like WW did, then maybe I'd agree that it could be impactful and I'd understand why some might consider it a game changer. But to me, it's just your average MCU origin story movie with more feminist leanings. But I'm just cis-white-male, so my opinion probably means little to nothing on the subject.

But anyone else up for a Early Days of SHIELD movie with de-aged Fury and Coulson?
