The visual style is pure Bayformers, but it was the obnoxious tone that killed those movies, not their looks. This could be fun.

It looks better than what the last trailer had shown so I am interested in seeing how it turns out but I definitely didn't forget the cliche 'varsity blues/dawsons creek' feel the last trailer had.

The giant gold thing looks stupid but the megazord looks better in film form than it does in toy form.

I was never a fan of Power Rangers, but this looks interesting. The only thing that killed it for me was the giant gold creature. What the heck? They couldn't come up with a better enemy monster?

^In the show Goldar was a dude with a lion face and wings decked out in gold armor. Here he's just a giant glob of gold roughly in the same shape as the Rangers' Megazord (which leads me to think they're connected).

The trailer makes the movie look like it might be fun. Much better than the previous trailers and teasers.

they do appear to have a fight out in the middle of nowhere for absolutely no explicable reason. That I can get behind.

How big would you say the Megazord is? I think it's a bit under normal kaiju size (but maybe the size increase in recent kaiju movies is throwing me off).

To be honest, my feelings toward the Power Rangers franchise are probably very different from most of you. I loved watching the original Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers on TV as a kid and I dug the 1995 movie. I watched episodes of the following series (Zeo, Turbo, and In Space) sporadically. I got into Lost Galaxy when it premiered and kept up with it for the most part all the way to the finale. I was in fifth grade by that point and once Lightspeed Rescue premiered, I realized just how disinterested I was in watching another whole new cycle of Power Rangers and I just stopped.

I still have nostalgic memories of the original MMPR series but I've long since grown out of it. There are things we get into as kids that are worth lifelong interest, and there are things that are just so bad that you really have to be a kid not to notice and it's best to just let them exist as fond childhood memories rather than revisiting them. For me, MMPR is definitely the latter. I actually tried watching some classic episodes a few years back when the original series was on Netflix, and holy crap, it's just so bad. I'm not even talking about the cheap production values; I'm talking about the high school scenes, all of the parts with the Rangers out of costume, which is basically half the show. The acting, the dialogue, the stories... Has anyone else here actually sat down and watched MMPR recently? It's really not good.

Since I genuinely have no desire to watch the original Power Rangers series for entertainment at this point in my life, the prospect of adapting the series into a modern, big-budget scifi action movie carries no sacrilege to me. I was indifferent to this project when it was first announced but I actually think the trailers make the movie look like it could be a lot of fun. The cast seems to play off each other well and the core elements of the original series are all on display: high school recruits, martial arts, colorful costumes, alien monsters, and a squad of giant robots that can combine into one. I don't get a Bayformers vibe from this at all. To me, this looks more like Chronicle meets Pacific Rim. I say bring it on!

Plus, Bryan Cranston is Zordon and Elizabeth Banks is Rita Repulsa. That's awesome.

I'm largely apathetic toward the franchise. I watched and enjoyed "Zyuranger" last year, but "MMPR" doesn't grab me at all. I watched a couple episodes on Netflix 3 or 4 years ago and decided I'd had my fill. (I stopped watching the franchise on TV around the time "Alien Rangers" became a thing.) I'm sure later Super Sentai/Power Rangers series are better in most respects, but at the moment, I lack interest beyond the mecha designs.

On the other hand, the new movie looks fun. The Zords and Goldar look a little better in motion than in toy form. The new trailer's tone strikes the right chord for me. Plus, to echo Ben, Cranston and Banks should make the experience worthwhile. I'm looking forward to it.

i tried revisiting the MMPR series a couple years ago and thought it was pretty weak, but in the past week or so my kid has expressed interest (due to the influx in new merch) so we've been watching it from the beginning and i think i really benefit from watching this through her eyes. She's really into the slapstick comedy and that there are two female heroes for her to pretend to be (i'm always asked to be a putty..). We just started the Green Ranger arc this morning and now I'm a little bummed this movie will be PG13, so i doubt we'll be able to see it in theater.

I stumbled across this gem on YouTube today. It's the original pitch from Saban to produce Power Rangers, and it's very different from what was actually produced. It was originally going to be called Galaxy Rangers, and the characters were going to be adults, rather than teenagers. Zack was going to be a detective, Billy an athlete, Trini a writer, and Kim a clumsy aerobics instructor. My favorite thing about this video is that it has Judas Priest's "Electric Eye" playing in the background.

^ I feel like those clips of the 'Galaxy Rangers' civilian identities are stock footage from other shows, which would make sense as it's only a demo showing how the concept would work. It reminds me of the Space Ghost Coast to Coast demo (which I haven't seen, not sure if it's ever surfaced) which apparently was just clips of the classic Space Ghost cartoon spliced into some interview footage of a celeb interview they took from CNN.

Ah, I read in the comments that the footage of the US actors is actually from an earlier pilot Saban did trying to adapt an earlier Sentai: Bioman!
