While I don't have first hand experience handling it, I have seen the reels and can imagine what a challenge physically wrangling IMAX film must be. But, when you're talking about real IMAX, shot with IMAX equipment and projected from real IMAX film in a real IMAX theater, it is TOTALLY worth it. It's not just bigger and louder (which is awesome in itself), but it is also SO MUCH more detailed and sharper!
I've only seen two Hollywood films on IMAX, both of which had scenes shot on real IMAX (The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises) and I am very glad I did. It was well worth the extra price for the extra immersion. I've also seen numerous documentaries which are almost always worth it for the cinematography alone.
In recent years I've become very passionate about film and its preservation. And I'm not talking about movies (though obviously that goes hand in hand) but the actual medium of film itself. It is an incredible thing and it was designed and is meant to be seen on large formats. IMAX takes that to the extreme and I LOVE it. I LOVE that it so completely fills your field of view that the filmmakers intentionally frame shots knowing that a big portion will be lost to your perifrial vision. I love that that enormous image is so incredibly sharp and detailed. And I love that it is on real, GIANT film.
As for all the Hollywood films that get blown up to IMAX, I don't care enough to pay the premium. Don't get me wrong, they WILL look better than their 35mm counterparts. 35mm negative duped onto 70mm will have less generational loss than 35mm duped to 35mm. I just don't think it's enough of a difference to justify the exhorbitant ticket price. But real IMAX shot on IMAX equipment and projected via IMAX film? TOTALLY WORTH IT.
