I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected. It's certainly not as distinctive a movie as the original. The direction lacks del Toro's artful eye, and the idea of jaeger pilots as frontier sheriffs has been dropped in favour of a more straightforward militaristic approach. Consquently, the music no longer has that amped-up western feel, instead going for something enjoyably synth-heavy. It's a shame the music was buried in the mix most of the time, but that's sadly typical for modern movies.

Pacing was actually better than the original. Uprising never drags, and doesn't blow its load in the second act like PR. The climax actually feels climactic this time, though it doesn't sell the desperation of a potentially world-ending situation as well as PR. Action-wise, it was nice to have daytime fights, there's some gloriously care-free city destruction, and the jaegers feel weightier than they did in that first trailer (though still not to the extent of PR). The only elements that really bugged me were the weak humour (which wasn't any worse than the typical Marvel movie) and the blatant China-baiting.

I find myself putting a caveat into every point I'm making here. Uprising isn't a great movie if you really disect it, but I had a great time watching it. Not every movie about giant robots beating up giant monsters needs to stealth in some arthouse pretensions or tear-jerking character drama. Sometimes it's okay if the robots just drop some buildings onto the monsters. After the landfill of burning rubbish that is the Bayformers series, being able to enjoy a big budget giant robot movie is no small pleasure.

This feels like the cheap Ultraman stuff in comparison to the original's Golden Age Godzilla. Weaker effects with no soul. What a downgrade. And apparently not all of the China pandering is gonna work considering the awful word of mouth its getting over there.

I've been awful negative, so I just wanted to say something positive: Burn Gorman is a delight, and the highlight of the film is him yelling -

I enjoyed it. It was not perfect, it was not up to the same level as the first but it was what it was.

I went in with low expectations. I'm happy to say I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It certainly was lacking the *specialty* that GDT gave the first film, but it was still fun, and way better than many sequels I've seen in recent years. While my opinion may ultimately change in time, one argument I dont agree with is this...

"Pacific Rim Uprising is to Pacific Rim what Independence Day Resurgence was to Independence Day" ---- NO FLIPPIN' WAY!!! ID4R was horrid, and gave me literally zero enjoyment. Sure the endings may *smack* of each other, but I'm sure there is no way that Hollywood EVER green lights a 3rd Independence Day. While *Uprising* may not succeed financially either, I can certainly see this continuing as an animated series, or even comic book, or series of novels, there's enough interest I'm sure. Nobody cares about ID4 at this point.

Pacific Rim: Uprising is a dumb, trashy B-movie. It is fun to watch for the most part but it doesn't hold a candle to the first film.

The pacing, editing and direction are really slick, the cinematography is well done and they actually do a much better job with the visual scale of the Jaegers and kaiju than I was expecting based on the first trailer.
The action is really great, much better than in last year's Power Rangers, although the Jaeger cadets in Uprising are nowhere near as interesting or layered as the Power Rangers. The first Pacific Rim had great action and solid character work whereas Power Rangers and Pacific Rim: Uprising each mostly got one half of the equation right. Uprising works best during its many action sequences and whenever Mako, Newt or Gottlieb are talking.

The more I think about it, the more it feels like this was the movie adaptation of a really cool Pacific Rim cartoon that we never got. If this plot with these characters were stretched over 20ish episode, able to flesh out the characters and plot points, it would be awesome.

Just got back from seeing it.

I felt it was a spaz minded movie. Doesn't like holding on a shot during the action. Really makes you appreciate Edwards/Del Toro's joy for longer shots.

I was bummed how quick they breezed through those 3 kaiju. I really enjoyed their designs. I wish NECA was making some toys again...

Initially the numbers look good. However, unlike most films PRU pretty much opened in ALL territories this weekend, including China. I dont expect it to hold

^Great to hear, Yes I think Japan was one of the few markets that was not Day-on-Date with PRU. Unfortunately the first PR didn't perform as well in Japan as anticipated IIRC because of poor marketing. Has there been a lot of news/advertising about PRU in Japan?

Scene was shot with him referenced as being dead, but was cut, and apparently, he's dead in the prequel novel.
