Ah, hip-hop isn't music. I see. That'll age about as well as those '60s sitcom parents making jokes about how The Beatles or The Stones aren't music. Since hip-hop is already the most significant force in popular music and has been for at least a decade at this point I'm gonna say you're on the losing side of this battle.

The trailer music per se isn't bad; I'll come to its defense. The "war ready, waaaar ready" part rubs me the wrong way, but I'm fine with the rest. I'm less certain it's helping the movie connect with a wider audience: it seems to divide people on here, Reddit, Twitter, etc. Maybe that's hip-hop for you, but still...

I just don't mind the music as used in the trailer - the repetition of a lyric cliché hasn't annoyed me the way, say, a slow, sad cover of old pop songs (which infuriates me) does.

Music is always subjective. I shouldn't really talk cause I listen to some things that would give most people headaches.

When I heard the "waaaaaar ready..." I just held my nose and waved my hand in front of my face. The rest of it is serviceable I guess. I'm being a little hyperbolic about it.

It was also explained to me that the guy singing is some famous guy. (TuPac?) So I guess that could get people excited. Don't hold me to that though I have no idea.

^A lot of the song (the 'get it on 'till I die' part) is audio sampled from a Tupac song, so it plays with the audience's familiarity... much like a really sad, slow version of a jaunty old pop song plays with audience familairity!

I loved the first Pacific Rim, and even though I'm sad Del Toro is not directing, this does look a lot more entertaining than Rampage or Jurassic World 2. And like everyone said, the music is so terrible. It doesn't fit at all and is completely out of place. I hope it isn't in the movie.

Tons of ads for this movie having been playing during the Olympics.

Since NBC is owned by Universal and this is a Legendary/Universal movie do they get the ad space for free or at least a reduced cost?

Checked out the article, they report that someone on Twitter asked Lorne Balfe about the music in the trailers, Balfe responded with "No need to worry." (relevant Twitter link)

The article also says that John Paesano completed his score last year, it would make for interesting comparison watching if the blu-ray has the movie with both Balfe's and Paesano's scores as options.

I am still disappointed that Ramin Djawadi isn't returning as the composer, his score for PR is great (I made sure to pick up a CD); but I'll still give Balfe a fair shake.

Lorne Balfe seems like a capable "replace and replicate" guy. He's done tons of sequels and side-quells, and has multiple "replaced so-and-so"s in his past.

I'm betting it's just gonna be little twists on what Djawadi already did.

I'm honestly astounded by the amount of ads they've been playing for, like, the last two weeks - and the movie's still three weeks away! Seems similar to the campaign for Kong last year.

I haven't watched the second trailer, but it seems to me the TV ads all are kinda based on trailer #1: introduce Boyega and show some stuff from the main city fight.

I can't wait for the Heisei era of PR, when we'll complain the Jaegers aren't as nimble as they were in Showa-era films like Uprising.

More seriously, I'm still optimistic about the movie. It's been said before, but I do think it's moved toward a Super Robot aesthetic, as opposed to riding the line between it and Real Robot. With that in mind, I'm prepared to give it leeway in certain aspects (the physics, the tone), as long as everything else measures up.

Considering its competition is A Wrinkle in Time and Tomb Raider, neither of which seems like sure-fire hit material, this does not bode well.

^Well, you know my philosophy: if it bombs, hope it tells a complete story so that you just get to enjoy it as its own thing. There's nothing more depressing than something being a tease for a sequel or series that never materialized. The first PacRim did this, so I hope Uprising does as well.

Pacific Rim is one of my favorite movies of the decade. I never thought it needed a sequel but I am really curious to see what Steven DeKnight does with it. He did a great job as showrunner on the first season of Daredevil, even writing and directing the season finale himself. I'm not expecting Uprising to be as good as its predecessor. It's clear from the first trailer that they aren't nailing the sense of size and scale the way the first film did. I've avoided watching the other trailers or any of the TV spots.

I am looking forward to seeing this movie but I'm still surprised that it got made at all. The first film was a box office flop on a $190 million production budget and there's really no reason to expect the sequel to break out any bigger. I hope the movie turns out to be good and makes me glad that it got made but I think it's going to be the latest of many box office underperformers for the Universal/Legendary partnership.

the sense of mass is gone but those textures really pop. the first movies kaiju had a very bland texture. I say someone should teach these guys how to add weight to their effects and it would be heaven. I think the Kaiju look way cooler than the first movies.

Then you have very SPOILER filled clips like this... that do show some weight. I guess it goes back and forth.
