The critical reception for this is far beyond what I dared hope for, and pretty much unheard of for films of this genre. If possible I'm even more excited now.

I came in expecting cgi garbage left having a blast. Mad Max Fury Road is is literally like one long 1980s thrash metal video of non stop action. Do not expect shakespeare enjoy the tricked out hot rods, explosions and ridiculous action scenes.

Mad Max 4 - Or as I like to call it, Twisted Metal The Movie - Now THIS is what The Expendables should have been. This movie is a high octane explosion fest that is pretty much one long car combat sequence with only moments of room to breath, and yet, the movie finds away to keep you engaged in what is going on without ever getting bored. If you are looking for a plot or character development, go somewhere else as this feels like it is just a video game with cut scenes in between to break up the action. The acting is fine for what it wanted to be, but the highlights include the fact that nearly everything is done with practical effects over CGI and its musical score is magnificent to the ear. It is no where near as good as Ex Machina or Avengers 2, but it is still a great movie that needs to be scene in the theater. I give it a 7/10 stars.

Honestly, Kain's comments are some of the most subdued and tempered about the film I've seen on the internet. This movie is hysterically over-hyped, like just about everything these days. Also, I agree with him about the characters, the more I think about them, the less I like them. Hardy's Max is a non-entity, Theron plays the stereotypical gruff hero here, and the slave girls are fine but forgettable. The best character in the movie is played by Hoult, as I was at least engaged with his immersion and de-programming in relation to the barbarian society.

I mean it's good, definitely a Top 10 action film of the decade (which says more about action films these days, really), but I think you could make the argument that the last few Fast & The Furious movies were better. The Avengers 2 is garbage from just about every technical aspect you can think of, but it's bravura moments are all character based, which is in sharp-contrast to this film, and I could see someone preferring it because of that.

I think it's a mis-read to call Hardy's Max a non-entity. I actually think the story they told with his character is a different/exceptionally bold choice in 21st century film. It's the story of an inhuman monster on a journey to becoming human again. It's not surprising you wouldn't choose to make a character like that the FOCUS of a film, because for 90% of this film's run-time we wouldn't like the Max character since he's basically just an animal surviving on instinct. It's not until just before the final action sequence of the film that he becomes something more than just an instinctual creature.

It almost reminds me of how Wikus is the main focus of District 9 despite the true hero of the movie being the alien. In order to align us with such an inhuman character, they need a humanized person (Charlize Theron in this case) to bring us in. And I think Theron's character is great. I love the little details with her like how she's looking for redemption. For what? We don't know, but it's pretty safe to assume that in order to become trusted enough to drive a War Rig, you have to do some terrible things to ingratiate yourself to Immortan Joe.

I don't think this movie has plot holes, I think it just trusts its audience enough to connect the dots and fill in the blanks and thus we don't wind up with something that's bloated and overlong.

I think there's a lot more going on under the surface of this movie than even its biggest supporters are throwing its way and combined with the EXCELLENT action choreography which blows swirling CGI nonsense out of the water (including Age of Ultron), better pacing, and a much more concise run-time, I enjoyed it so much more than the average blockbuster and it sets the bar for the rest of the summer.

Except I hate District 9 for that very reason. I can't stand Wikus, so I can't stand the movie.

For this though, the movie is called Mad Max. I expect to see Mad Max on screen 90% of the time, but he is absent for most of the first half of the film. I'm not saying it is bad or anything, but it has a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes while Avengers has a 74 and Ex Machina has a 91. That means this movie is supposed to be superior to both of those in everything from dialog, to character development, and action sequences.

I don't think the pacing was any better than Avengers either. It was perfect in both of those movies. Run time wise, there is only a 20 minute difference, so it isn't that big of a deal. And like Avengers 2, I have this urge to want to see this movie a second time.

I'm just happy though that they kept the garbage forced Adam West antics from the third movie out of this movie completely.

BTW, I completely agree with Jeremy Jahns that Joe could have been Sweet Tooth's father.

So I have a question. Who was the little girl haunting Max? I ask because Max had a son not a daughter.

I just sort of assumed it was one of the kids from Beyond Thunderdome because I hadn't seen it in a long time. But if that doesn't work, then I think the answer is just that this isn't like a DIRECT sequel to Thunderdome (and POSSIBLY not even a sequel to it at all, since the timeline is ambiguous) and any number of unseen events could have happened to Max over the years.

George Miller has said he doesn't really intend this to be a hard timeline type of thing; just an adventure in this world with Max.

Nah man, I'll find a link when I'm not on my phone, but he said it's a "revisit" to a familiar world and the time line and chronology don't make sense.

So it's just a random Mad Max adventure and not in any particular place in the time line

It's like George Miller spent the last 30 years thinking "yeah, I can do better." Fury Road is the best parts of all previous Mad Max perfectly combined and turned up to 11.

Yeah that ghost daughter is the only thing that break continuity with the rest of the series, but if that's all, I'm fine with him having a dead retcon daughter. And it kind of fits with the "rescue the girls" thing going on through out the film.
