^The solution to the Kessel Run was actually rather genius. There has been a long running conundrum in Star Wars fandom because the way Han says it in the original film makes it sound like a parsec is a unit of time. But in real life a parsec is a unit of distance.
As for my opinion of the movie... it’s mixed. I thought the opening was slow and it took a bit for the film to find its footing, Then it got significantly better. The train heist and Kessel Run were pretty fun. The third act was a bit messy but it was working fine for me until that cameo...BLECH! That ripped me right out of the movie and SERIOUSLY damped my enthusiasm. So much that the film barely recovered after that point. Like, I dunno if I’ll bother seeing this again in the theater. Maybe if it’s a cheapie matinee.
The absolute highlight was Chewbacca. He was just wonderful in everything he did. Perfect.
Han and Lando were both good. Not great, but quite good. I have no issue accepting these guys as the classic characters, which is really pretty huge when you think about it.
The Falcon was also quite good (yes the Falcon is a character in my eyes! As much as something like the Tardis or Enterprise!)
The humor was often flat or just dumb, which was hugely disappointing. A Han Solo movie should’ve been the funniest (in a “Raider of the Lost Ark” kinda way) new Star Wars film since Disney took over and it just wasn’t.
A lot of the film felt too predictable, like it was just walking through all the things necessary to make Han the character we met in ANH. I mean, I expected a lot of that, but it still just kinda felt “paint by numbers” at times.
I dunno, I’ve got more but that’s enough for now. Overall, after one viewing, I’d say it’s a 2 or maybe 2 1/2 out of 4.
But Chewbacca was fantastic. I might see it again just for him.
