I used to think Godzilla fans might be the worst...and in some ways they still KINDA are. There's probably no other fanbase that latches onto rumors, faux 'celebs,' unofficial sources, misinformation, and general nonsense the way this fandom does. It's been almost 60 years and there are still quite a few people who think King Kong vs Godzilla had a different ending in the Japanese version. People in this fandom will ask guys who've drawn pictures for comics/magazines about their opinions and take those things as gospel truth. It's a pitfall that comes with being a fan of an ultimately niche foreign product, I suppose, but it can be extremely frustrating.
Still, that doesn't hold a candle to Star Wars fans. I don't think anything does. Even DC fans, who've shown some ugly faces recently, aren't up (down?) to that level. Their anger is always projected OUTWARDS, away from their chosen franchise/fandom and at others.
Star Wars fans dress like KKK Storm Troopers and threaten the lives of the people involved in their franchise. They send directors death threats and claim they're owed apologies for not seeing enough white representation in the franchise.
Ridley and Tran deleting their social media account is less about being sad due to being bullied and more about not wanting to give these nightmarish people a place to spew their rancid rhetoric. Yeah, they'll still shout it, but not in front of the types of numbers that would follow Daisy Ridley online.
What a rotting cesspool Star Wars is turning out to be, and with each subsequent movie turning me off to the franchise on its own more and more, the combined might of its disgusting fans has me primed to just shut myself off to its nonsense and only focus on the three movies I enjoy, despite their now diminished significance and singularity.
