Ant-Man (2015)

It sort of has an Iron Man (1) feel and more of a standalone looking story. Two things I've been missing from this MCU.

I would have preferred Wright to a director-for-hire, but that's pretty much how these Marvel films roll. I'm game.

Ant-Man hits theaters tomorrow, July 17th, and I recently had the chance to sit down and speak with director Peyton Reed to discuss sequels, comic nerds that may surprise you, villains, Guardians, Fantastic Four and more!

Just got back and I loved it. Its loaded with action and humor. Michael Douglas knocked it out of the park as Hank Pym. The subplot of a man trying to spend time with his daughter but his ex won't let him till he gets his cap together is pretty predictable but man were those fight scenes awesome. Solid 7/10
Also stay after the credits.

Me and the fam saw it this evening. We loved it! I was kind of ehhhh on Ant Man a while ago. Then I saw the full trailer and I was like ok, this looks like it will have some promise, then saw the movie, and as I said, loved it! Can't wait for sequels and hopeful cameos in future Marvel movies. Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, and Evangeline Lilly were great in their respective roles. And like Danny said, the fight sequences were great, and stay for the mid credit and end credit scenes.

Thumbs WAY up on this one! What "Ultron" took away (interest in the MU universe), this one brought it right back. I think it was needed and it brought a fresh perspective on everything (seeing this from a different point-of-view).

The secret origin of Ant-Man:

I thought it was alright. I liked most of it. The shadow of Edgar Wright's version will always hang over the movie, and Marvel definitely got a Yes Man in the form of Peyton Reed. Every cliché superhero origin story detail is on display, not to mention the common MCU complaints are magnified (forced humor & continuity references, a cool looking but underdeveloped villain, etc.). The movie doesn't get to stand on its own two feet very well. If Ant-Man were a more well known character this easily could've been a Phase 1 film, and more successful overall.

That said, the colorful size-shifting action scenes are very unique and the real highlight of the movie. Ant-Man (along with Wasp hopefully) are set too appear in Civil War and I hope those details are brought over. But as for future standalone appearances, unless the first film surprises the box-office like Guardians did, I don't see sequels happening.

I walked into this movie with very low expectations considering it is Ant-Man and came out immensely impressed. It feels like watching the first Iron Man movie all over again. It was fun, had some really great character moments, and the action was well done. It didn't try to do too much, but it does have some flaws (specifically a relationship moment between Hank and Hope and how garbage of a character Scott's daughter was). There are some down right hilarious pieces as the comedy was perfect. My favorite scene is easily the fight in the suit case though, especially when Seri starts playing some music. It is definitely worth its 8/10 stars. Finally, there are scenes during and after the credits, so don't go anywhere.

I doubt it's gonna FLOP, but it could be their lowest grossing film in quite some time.

A lot of reasons for this, imho.

1.) Marvel fatigue. Not so much "in general" but Age of Ultron hasn't even been out of theaters that long and here this is.
2.) Poor scheduling. When Guardians dropped last year, July had been a bit of a wasteland with few big blockbusters. We're in a bit of a general fatigue state in the box office right now (we being all audiences) as we've had Magic Mike XXL, Terminator, Minions, Ant-Man, and Pixels all marketed down our throats.
3.) The shooting on Thursday kinda killed the box office. I think the winning film this past weekend is like 25 million...that's LOW.

I saw Ant-Man last Monday and enjoyed the movie immensely. The story seemed pretty well balanced to me, with the humor a natural part of the story (rather than a forced bit of comedy). I thought the action/fight scenes were well crafted and of course impressive shrinking/growing effects. There is a particularly fantastic one towards the end of the movie where Ant-Man shrinks and as he does we see a series of nested translucent after-images.

Also, about some of the ant sounds...



Out of curiousity, did anyone catch any references to either Them! (less likely seeing as WB has it), The Incredible Shrinking Man (less likely, Universal has it), or Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (more likely, with Disney)?

Reading up on Hank Pym prior to the films release, I noted that he eventually develops the ability to shrink or grow without needing a fuel tank of Pym particles. The movie notes
