So...this was awful. Its success is even more mind-boggling than its atrocious quality as a story. I mean $750 million? REALY?!?! The F***?!?!
Not since Alice in Wonderland have I been so utterly BAFFLED by a movie's success. I mean, yeah, just about every single year there are a few movies in the top 10 that I personally wouldn't spend a dime to see in theaters, but that doesn't mean their success is a complete mystery to me.
Imagine if Snow White and the Huntsman were a way worse film from a storytelling perspective. Imagine if that particular film, for its middle third just stopped in its tracks and did NOTHING that hadn't been already established in the first thirty minutes, much of which in itself was pointless. But also imagine it being more colorful, having a better sense of humor, and maybe slightly better acting. That's Maleficent. It fixes a couple of the problems of that Snow White movie but creates so VERY many more, it's astonishing.
Ultimately, you wind up with a film of roughly the same level of quality as Snow White and the Huntsman but somehow this time it made more than DOUBLE what the previous film managed to take. WHAT?!?!
